🎨🎶 What Makes It Italian? The Return of Music + Art with our Music Club.

What can a Renaissance painting tell us about the music of its time? And what might a madrigal reveal about the architecture and visual culture of 16th-century Rome?

On Tuesday, October 6 at 6 PM, What Makes It Italian? returns with an exploration of Renaissance Rome, bringing music and art into conversation.

We’ll look at the new secular musical genre of the madrigal alongside the emergence of the villa suburbana, exploring the work of composer Sebastiano Festa and architect Baldassare Peruzzi, whose Villa Farnesina provides the setting for Raphael’s celebrated Galatea.

Led by Gina Crusco, the free online listening and discussion group explores the qualities and connections that make Italian music and art distinctly—and sometimes unexpectedly—Italian.

Free and open to everyone. Online via Zoom.

A new chapter for Casa Italiana is about to begin.

As we finalize the details of our auditorium renovation — the first phase of our renewal project — we are thinking carefully about the space we want to create: welcoming, comfortable, and worthy of the conversations, performances, ideas, and encounters that have filled it for decades.

You can help make it possible. Every contribution, whatever its size, makes a difference. Your support will help bring these plans to life and ensure that Casa remains a place where Italian culture can continue to be studied, experienced, shared, and enjoyed in New York City.

Interested in sponsoring a seat? Seat sponsorships start at $2,000 and include a double Casa membership for the next two years. But you do not need to sponsor a seat to support the renovation — donations of any amount are warmly welcomed. A contribution of $75 or more also includes one year of Casa membership.

Support the renovation. Help shape what comes next.

What happens when a centuries-old ritual of music, dance, and trance moves from the peasant world of Salento into the contemporary imagination?

Tonight at Casa Italiana: Tarantismo – Odyssey of an Italian Ritual, a journey through the history and afterlife of tarantismo—from a contested form of healing to its rediscovery by ethnomusicologists, its transformation into cultural heritage, and its echoes in contemporary ritual and music.

Alan Marzo-Strani, co-author of Tarantismo: Odyssey of an Italian Ritual and co-founder of FLEE, will present the book and its companion LP, featuring rare field recordings of tarantismo healing sessions made in the 1950s by Diego Carpitella and Alan Lomax, alongside contemporary reinterpretations.

The evening continues with a conversation with Alessandra Belloni, singer, percussionist, dancer, and researcher of Southern Italian healing traditions, moderated by Emilio Tamburini, Ph.D. Candidate at NYU.

🏠 What if getting your own home meant waiting for someone to die?

On September 17, Casa Italiana welcomes Karen Pinkus, author of Nuda proprietà (Derive Approdi, 2026), for a conversation with historian and author Vanessa Roghi, Tiro a Segno Visiting Fellow in Italian American Studies at NYU, with Isabella Livorni.

At the center of Pinkus’s novel is Franca, a forty-year-old single woman living in Rome who dreams of one simple thing: a home of her own. Tired of her family, her domineering sister, and her aging father, she signs a nuda proprietà contract—the right to live in a property while giving up its ownership until the current owner dies.

There’s just one problem: the owner is 87… and has no intention of dying.

What follows is a feminist mystery with surreal touches of true crime, set against a Rome of traffic, garbage, family dramas—and unexpected hidden beauty.

A darkly funny story about home, autonomy, aging, family, and the absurdities of contemporary life.
