📝 WHY WRITING IS THE ONE SECTION YOU CAN'T CRAM

I've written a piece for Eastern Suburbs Mums about the exam section that catches families out every year.

Maths can be revised. Reading comprehension improves with practice tests. Even spelling responds to drilling.

Writing is different, and you can't cram it.

In the article, I cover what markers are actually looking for, why a bright child with wonderful ideas can still sit in the middle bands, and the one thing that separates students who improve from students who plateau.

🏆 ICAS WRITING: HIGH DISTINCTION + TOP 1% IN AUSTRALIA

🦊 2026 SO FAR — EIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS AND A NATIONAL WRITING TITLE

📊 NAPLAN and selective results

* 90% of our Year 3, 5 and 7 students achieved the Top Band (Exceeding) in NAPLAN
* 10% placed in the national top 1% for NAPLAN Writing
* 80% of our Year 6 students scored in the Top 10% for Selective Writing
* 88% gained entry to a selective school

✍️ National Writing Competition Winner

A Year 6 Clever Fox student took 1st Place in the Junior Writing Category of the Young Voices Awards, judged against entrants from Years 5 and 6 across Australia.

Behind every one of those results is a child who turned up each week, wrote when it was hard, read their feedback, and did the work again. That's the whole secret, and it belongs to them.

🏆 SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS + TOP 1% IN AUSTRALIA FOR NAPLAN WRITING

Top 10% in Selective School Writing. Two full private school scholarships.

🌟 From struggling with writing in Year 4 to winning best book reviewer across Years 5 and 6 🌟

Flora joined Clever Fox as a student who found writing difficult. This year — while still in Year 5 — she won her school's prize for best book reviewer across both Year 5 and Year 6.

But the part that matters most isn't the prize. It's what she's done with the skills since.

Flora has taken her persuasive writing into her school's regional debating team, using it to build her arguments and rebuttals. And she was the main author of her team's script for OptiMinds, the creative thinking competition — where her team won an Honour Award for the Brisbane North Region.

That's a student who has stopped being taught to write and started using writing.

🌟 "Artificial intelligence can't replicate this." 🌟

That line came from a Clever Fox parent this week, and it stopped me in my tracks.

A lot of families are experimenting with AI writing feedback at the moment, and I understand why — it's fast, it's free, and it catches technical errors well.

But here's what it can't do.

It can't look at a Year 6 student's narrative and know that this particular child is finally ready to be pushed on structure. It can't tell that another one needs encouragement this week rather than correction. It can't hold eight months of a student's development in mind and see the exact moment the writing turns a corner.

That judgement comes from knowing the child — and from 30+ years of teaching, including as a NAPLAN and ICAS assessment developer at UNSW Global.

It's why I personally mark every single piece of writing my students produce.
