Look at this focused little learner carefully cutting out colourful pictures with scissors! Developing scissor skills is such an important milestone in preschool, and moments like this show just how much confidence and control our children are gaining.
At Gumnut Gardens, we provide plenty of opportunities for safe, supervised cutting activities because they play a powerful role in preparing children for school.
How Scissor Skills Support School Readiness:
Fine Motor Strength & Control
Using scissors strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers — directly preparing children for writing, drawing, colouring, and using classroom tools.
Hand-Eye Coordination & Bilateral Coordination
Holding the paper with one hand while cutting with the other helps develop the coordination needed for many school tasks.
Focus, Concentration & Sequencing
Following lines, shapes, or patterns builds attention to detail and the ability to follow steps — skills essential for classroom activities and learning.
Creativity & Confidence
Turning a plain sheet into something special gives children a wonderful sense of achievement and encourages creative expression.
Independence & Self-Help Skills
Mastering scissors supports overall independence, from art projects to practical tasks in the classroom.
These hands-on experiences are especially valuable for all children, including our neurodivergent friends, as they support sensory processing, motor planning, and building a strong foundation for learning.
We’re so proud of every snip and smile!

🌟 Learning Through Playdough & Loose Parts – Pure Preschool Magic! 🌟
Look at our preschoolers completely absorbed in this rich, hands-on playdough and loose parts invitation! From rolling, pressing and creating with wooden slices, corks, and natural materials to building imaginative structures, this kind of open-ended play is gold for young brains and bodies.
We believe play is the serious work of childhood, and activities like this are powerful builders of school readiness.
How Playdough & Loose Parts Support School Readiness:
Fine Motor Skills & Hand Strength
Squeezing, rolling, poking, and manipulating dough and loose pieces strengthens little hands and fingers, essential preparation for writing, drawing, cutting, and using pencils and scissors at school.
Creativity & Imagination
With no “right” way to play, children invent stories, designs, and worlds. This builds flexible thinking and expressive language.
Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking
Figuring out how to balance sticks, connect pieces, or turn an idea into reality encourages planning, experimenting, and persistence.
Sensory Exploration & Regulation
The textures of playdough, wood, and natural materials provide calming sensory input while helping children explore cause and effect.
Social Skills & Collaboration
Sharing materials, negotiating ideas, and working side-by-side builds cooperation, turn-taking, and communication, key skills for classroom life.
Focus, Concentration & Confidence
Deep, joyful engagement in meaningful play helps extend attention spans and gives children a strong sense of “I can do it!”
We love setting up these beautiful, open-ended experiences because they naturally support every child, including neurodivergent learners, in developing the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.

📖 Reading "In My Heart: A Book of Feelings" with our preschoolers ❤️
This week we’ve been enjoying the beautiful book "In My Heart: A Book of Feelings" by Jo Witek. With its gorgeous rainbow heart pages and gentle illustrations, it’s a wonderful way to explore emotions together.
We read it during group time and talked about all the different feelings we carry in our hearts, happy, sad, brave, angry, calm, and everything in between. The children loved pointing to the colourful hearts and acting out the feelings with their bodies.
🌟 Why this matters for growing good citizens:
It helps children recognise and name their own feelings.
It builds empathy and helps them notice emotions in others.
It encourages kindness, patience, and respectful communication.
It supports emotional intelligence and school readiness.
We followed the story with a simple heart-art activity, drawing or collaging what’s in their hearts today. These moments help us raise compassionate, emotionally aware little humans who will grow into thoughtful members of our community.
Books like this are such powerful tools in early childhood education!
What’s one feeling your little one has been exploring lately?
I’d love to hear in the comments! 👇

📸 Stand & Create – Our Active Art Table! 🎨🧍♂️
We're always reflecting on our practices to create the best possible learning environment for every child. We’re guided by the principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), backed by decades of research and child development theorists like Piaget, Vygotsky, and others who emphasise active, hands-on learning through play and movement.
During our indoor routines, we noticed plenty of sedentary activities with limited opportunities for leg movement and big-body play. And let’s be honest, with lots of energetic boys in our setting, we wanted to support their natural need to move while still engaging in creative expression!
So we set up this Stand & Create Active Art Table, a simple but effective space where children can stand, shift their weight, move freely, and create without being stuck in one spot. The results? Happier, more engaged kids who are burning energy, building gross and fine motor skills, and expressing their big ideas.
Research shows young children (especially in early childhood settings) benefit hugely from reducing long periods of sitting and incorporating movement throughout the day.
The WHO and Australian guidelines recommend plenty of physical activity and limiting sedentary time for healthy development — and creative standing activities are a fantastic way to achieve that while supporting cognitive, social, and emotional growth.
We love watching the children thrive when we listen to their needs and respond thoughtfully. This is just one small example of how reflection leads to meaningful change! 💛
