The paint's tidy, it starts first go, the seller seems honest. So you shake hands. Then the bonnet comes up properly and the real story starts: the weeping seal, the mismatched hoses, the "recent rebuild" that clearly wasn't.

A proper pre-purchase check is the cheapest money you'll spend on a classic - because the alternative is finding all of it after the transfer's gone through. Someone who knows what they're looking at sees what a quick glance under the bonnet never will.

Buying a classic? Get it checked before you commit.

Up on the hoist is where a classic stops keeping secrets. The bits you can't see from the driveway - the chassis rails, the floors, the underside of a "rust-free" body - are exactly where the expensive surprises hide.

That's the half of a pre-purchase check no walk-around covers. A good look underneath tells you whether you're buying a solid car or someone else's unfinished project, before the money changes hands rather than after.

Thinking of buying? Book it up on the hoist first.

Every classic owner knows the fault that won't be found alone. One person on the spanner, one on the torch, one who's seen it before and one learning as they watch. Half the diagnosis happens out loud, between four people leaning over the same engine bay.

That's how it works in our workshop 0 problems worked through together, not handed off. It's also how the learning sticks. What's a fault you've only ever cracked with a mate looking over your shoulder? Tell us in the comments.

The engine comes out on a Sunday. Everyone's grinning. Then the block needs machining, the loom's more perished than it looked, and the "quick tidy-up" has quietly turned into a five-figure job.

That's not bad luck - it's just what happens when the plan comes after the spanner instead of before it. A bit of thinking up front - which jobs you'll do, which you'll pay for, what the real timeline looks like - is the difference between a project you finish and one that lives under a tarp for three years.

Pull it apart with your eyes open. Our beginner's guide walks you through what to weigh up before you begin.

"My car could pay for itself." Nearly every owner has that thought at some point, usually somewhere around the third fuel bill of the month.

The honest version is more interesting than the fantasy. Earning from a classic is real - but it takes the right prep, a car that's genuinely ready, and a clear head about what you're signing up for. That's the bit the internet skips.

We'd rather walk you through it properly. Our coaching and mentoring lays out the actual picture - the work, the setup, the trade-offs - from people who've done it, not people selling a dream.

The classic that's perfect on a Sunday run around the block is a different animal three hours from home on an unfamiliar road.

Most roadside dramas aren't dramatic at all before they happen - a weeping hose, a belt going shiny, oil sitting a touch low. Five quiet minutes in the shed catches the things that turn into a tow truck later. Oil, coolant, a proper look over anything loose, leaking or worn.

Knowing what you're looking at is the real skill though - and that's learnable. Our breakdown survival course covers what to check before you leave and what to actually do when something lets go on the road.

There's a timing light on our bench that's older than most of the cars it's set. Paint worn off the grip, one crack held together with electrical tape, and it's dialled in more engines than anyone here can count. Nobody would sell it. Nobody would replace it.

Every workshop has one. The spanner that came from a father-in-law. The socket you've had so long you've forgotten buying it. The tool that's outlasted three cars and isn't done yet.

They carry a few scratches and a lot of stories.

What's the oldest tool in your kit - and where did it come from? Tell us in the comments. πŸ‘‡

Most people who walk in for their first class say the same thing: "I don't really know what I'm doing." Good. That's exactly who we built these for.

You don't need a background, the right tools, or a clue where to start. You need to be curious enough to get your hands dirty - the rest is what the workshop is for. Real cars, real guidance, and someone leaning over the engine bay next to you instead of talking at you from the front of a room.

Everyone who's confident under a bonnet started out not being. Come find out how quickly that changes.

Everyone shares the finished car. Almost nobody shows what it took to get there.

The first strip-down, the fault that took three weekends to chase, the day it finally rolls out looking right - most of that never makes it into a photo. But that in-between bit is where the real work (and the real satisfaction) lives.

Working on something yourself? We'd genuinely love to see it - tag us in your progress.

There's almost always something going on behind our roller doors.

A car partway through a job, tools spread out, someone deep in concentration over an engine bay. It's a working space with a genuine community around it - and if you're ever passing and curious what we get up to, the door's usually open.

Drop by, have a look, say hello. That's how a lot of our members started.
