We have made many changes to this beautiful community, from the very first workshop 6 years ago, teaching Aboriginal Cultural Awareness ( Eddie Wiradjuri Birrang , Aunty Rhonda Towney, Uncle Rafie Naden oam, Chris Halls, hector oilers, terry ) .

I remember the worse thing I had to ever do before the workshop and it was to tell the Elders the night before in the motel ….. There logo was Capt Cook….. WOW that was a moment I’m sure there was a bundi on the table with my name on it 😢😩.
After the full weekend of workshops, I was amazed by the Elders and their happiness….. As then I knew to was a positive Journey ahead.

The change has been huge compared to any other Community or Council LGA Sutherland Shire Council Early Education, Sutherland Shire Council , Jack Boyd - Deputy Mayor of the Sutherland Shire

The only thing that has not changed is the logo …. Capt Cook, but ever part of that land ( Dharawal) has changed with education, partnerships, first Yarn circle in a Childcare Centre created and made by Eddie and Aunty Rhonda, walking in unity and teams of educators of a Council that are inspiring to the whole Australia…. Because they care❤️

Have a review and have your say, please not in a defensive way but productive view point🫶🏽

Captain Cook crest sparks tradition vs ‘woke’ branding debate in the Shire.

Sutherland Shire councillors have voted 11-1 to investigate the disappearance of the Captain Cook crest from council branding, reigniting debate over whether local history is being quietly phased out.

While the historic crest remains Council’s official emblem, a modern blue wave logo has increasingly replaced it across signage, correspondence and promotional material since 2017.

Supporters of the review say the issue is about preserving the Shire’s identity and history. Opponents argue the current balance between the traditional crest and modern branding already works.

The motion passed overwhelmingly and will examine where the crest has been removed, whether it should be restored more broadly, and what any changes could cost.

Mayor Carmelo Pesce believes the review is about protecting local history and preserving the Shire’s identity, while opponents argued the existing mix of traditional and modern branding already strikes the right balance.

🚨 COMMENT - What do you think is the way forward for representation?

AN ABORIGINAL TOTEM WAS MORE THAN A SYMBOL.

For Nyoongar people of south-west Western Australia, a totem can represent an ongoing relationship between a person, family and boodja — Country.

A totem is not simply an emblem.

It can carry responsibilities toward the living world.

That relationship can involve:

PLANTS • ANIMALS • COUNTRY • FAMILY • COMMUNITY

Nyoongar Knowledge Holder Dr Noel Nannup explains that totems connect people with the natural world and carry obligations about how that relationship should be maintained.

A person may have a responsibility to care for, protect and respect the species or part of Country connected with their totem.

This means the relationship works in both directions:

COUNTRY PROVIDES.
PEOPLE HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES.

The concept is therefore very different from the modern idea of an animal symbol representing a person or group.

It is about:

IDENTITY
+
BELONGING
+
RESPONSIBILITY
+
CARE FOR COUNTRY

And the knowledge is not simply about individual animals.

It forms part of a much larger Nyoongar understanding of boodja, where people, plants, animals, places and relationships are interconnected.

Importantly, Nyoongar culture is specific to south-west Western Australia.

This is not a universal description of every Aboriginal Nation or every Aboriginal totemic system.

A TOTEM WAS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU REPRESENTED.

IT COULD BE SOMETHING YOU HAD A RESPONSIBILITY TOWARD.

Dreamtime Explorers Australia

What the Yarn for the week for Dreamtime Explorers?

Coming Soon – Sharing Culture Through Conversation

In just four weeks, we will be launching a new series of podcasts, YouTube videos, and TikTok content dedicated to sharing, celebrating, and teaching Aboriginal culture.

Each week, we will release new content exploring a range of cultural topics, stories, traditions, and contemporary perspectives, providing an opportunity for people to learn directly from Aboriginal voices and experiences.

As part of this series, we are honoured to be interviewing and yarning with respected Elders and Aboriginal community members (Mob), who will generously share their knowledge, lived experiences, cultural teachings, and stories. These conversations will provide authentic insights into Aboriginal culture, history, connection to Country, language, art, traditions, and the importance of preserving cultural knowledge for future generations.

A new link will be released each week, and we invite everyone to join us on this journey of learning, listening, and building greater understanding and respect for the world's oldest living culture.

We look forward to welcoming you to these conversations and sharing the voices, stories, and wisdom of our Elders and Mob.❤️💛🖤💙
