Omphalocele occurs when there is failure in the ingress of abdominal contents following physiological umbilical herniation during weeks 6-10 when the gastrointestinal system is developing. Herniation is via the umbilical ring thus abdominal contents are covered by amnion. Omphalocele has a high mortality (25%) because it is associated with severe neural tube and heart defects. Watch the video discussing differences between omphalocele and gastroschisis in an upcoming video on YouTube (14/3/22 release)

Gastroschisis occurs when the ventral wall of the abdomen fails to close properly. The abdominal contents will herniate directly through the abdominal wall (not through the umbilicus like in omphalocele). Not associated with any severe defects in development but may result in volvulus and injury to organs from the amniotic fluid as it is not covered by the amnion
