New Driving Regulations for International License Holders in Australia
Starting March 1st, new regulations will be enforced for international license holders wishing to drive in Australia. These regulations are designed to ensure road safety and compliance with local laws. The key points of the new rules are as follows:
1. Conversion to Australian License
All international license holders must convert their international license to an Australian license in order to drive on Australian roads. This requirement applies regardless of the visa status of the license holder.
2. Duration of Driving with an International License
• Permanent Visa Holders: May drive for up to 3 months with an international license.
• Temporary Visa Holders: May drive for up to 6 months with an international license.
3. Driving Tests and Lessons
International license holders can sit for their driving test even if their international license has expired or is no longer valid. However, there are restrictions on driving and lessons:
• Drivers with an expired or invalid international license are not permitted to drive alone.
• They are also prohibited from taking lessons with driving instructors if their international license is expired or invalid.
4. Guidelines for Driving Instructors
If you are a driving instructor, it is essential to adhere to the following guidelines:
• Inquire about your students' visa status.
• Ask how long they have been in Australia.
• If their international license is invalid, do not proceed with the lesson and advise them to obtain a learner’s license first.
5. Penalties and Insurance
Failure to comply with these regulations may result in substantial penalties for both drivers and instructors. Additionally, in the event of a crash, insurance coverage will be invalid if the driver is operating a vehicle with an expired or invalid international license.
