What if the thing you call your "superpower" is actually the thing that's exhausting you?
I walked into that movie screening room this weekend carrying all my hard-earned titles — actress, epidemiologist, coach, author, community leader, etc. I walked out holding something different: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻.

The African Film Festival in Sydney was screening Skylark, produced by Dr. Yanique Redwood — author of White Women Cry and Call Me Angry and founder of Collective Work, whose life's work centres healing, connection and liberation for Black and people of colour. As the dialogue unfolded, my professional armour quietly slipped away. What surfaced instead was a truth I'd carried so long I'd stopped noticing it: my "superpower" — doing so much with so little, taught by my mama, forged by circumstance — had a shadow side. Underneath the pride was guilt for simply existing, and a lifelong habit of sacrificing my own happiness to keep everyone else afloat.

To hear both women and men in that room declare that we no longer need to wear survival and exhaustion as a crown — that landed with a clarity I can't unfeel.

I left with three things I'm now carrying into my own work, and inviting you to sit with too:

1️⃣ Write down your invisible, unpaid work — bring your emotional and physical labour out of the shadows.
2️⃣ Keep doing what pleases you — honour your joy unapologetically.
3️⃣ Stop doing what doesn't please you — release the people-pleasing, without the guilt.

We're allowed to choose peace and pleasure over exhaustion as proof of worth. That conviction is exactly why I do the work I do with women navigating their next chapter — because you don't have to keep proving your strength through how much you can carry. And as someone who's now stepping more fully into the creative side of my own story, this festival reminded me why spaces like this matter so much.

Deep gratitude to Cole for the invitation, and Hinga and Amadou, the visionary directors behind this festival, and to . Yanique Redwood for a film and a conversation that shifted something in me. Beautiful to connect again with Tracy Tabvuma and my own Jamaican community's Anna Morris — and such a joy to see Emelda Davis, our beloved Australian South Sea Islander leader, whose own journey I've been privileged to walk alongside since my early PhD years here in Australia.

Invest in yourself. You don't always have to do so much with so little.

𝗔 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲💚🖤💛

As the sun rises this Friday, February 27th, we celebrate Jamaica Day 2026. This year is a historic landmark—the 25th Anniversary of the Jamaica Day movement and the 15th official proclamation by the Governor General. 📜✨🇯🇲

The theme, “𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒄𝒂: 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚,” resonates deeply with me.

As my role as the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (GJDC) Representative for Asia and the Pacific officially concludes this weekend (Feb 28th), I look back at our journey through the lens of these three powerful pillars. 🌏🙏
❤️ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬,: The Spirit of Relief
Kindness is an action. We saw this clearly in our response to the devastating Hurricane Melissa whoxh left a wake of destruction in our island nation. The Jamaican diaspora in Australia moved with incredible speed, and heart, raising over US$17,000 in relief funds. 🌪️🩹 This kindness extended beyond our own, as our Australian neighbors and friends joined us in supporting the recovery of our island home. 🤝🆘

🦁 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞:
It has taken much effort and courage to redefine how Jamaica is viewed in this "far-flung" region. Together, we achieved diplomatic milestones that were once thought impossible:
• A Historic First: We hosted the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, in Queensland—the first-ever visit of its kind to Australia in 2024! 🏛️🇯🇲
• Building Bridges: In Sydney, alongside the Jamaican Association of Australia (JAA), we hosted a formal welcome for Her Excellency Shorna-Kay Richards, former High Commissioner for Jamaica to Australia. 🚢🌉

🥁 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: A Culture Shared
Our community is the heartbeat of our impact. Whether celebrating Jamaica 60th Independence or our annual Black History Month events, we haven’t just kept our culture to ourselves—we’ve invited all of Australia to the party. 💃🕺
• On the Field: From the Reggae Girlz ⚽ at the World Cup to the Sunshine Girls 🏀 dominating their recent 2026 series in Adelaide, Perth, and Melbourne, the "community" now includes thousands of Australians who cheer for the Black, Green, and Gold.🇯🇲
• In the Streets: From culinary traditions to music and academic excellence, we continue to showcase the very best of who we are. 🍛🎶🎓

✨ 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 🇯🇲
Navigating time zones and thousands of miles has been a challenge, but the support of the diaspora in Asia and Pacific and the wider Australian community made every mile worth it. ✈️⏰

While my regional role is changing, I am not going anywhere. My focus returns home to the Jamaican diaspora in Australia, where I will continue to lead and support our local community.

On this Jamaica Day, I’m encouraging you to wear your national colors with pride and live the theme: be kind, be courageous, and stay rooted in community. 🖤💚💛

Earlier this week, I was deeply grateful to receive the WSLHD Integrated and Community Health Achievements in Community Excellence Award for Research.

This award recognises the evaluation of our innovative Evaluation Capacity Building Program, developed using a "Learning by Doing" approach alongside my colleague, Conjoint Prof. Ben Smith from the Prevention Research Collaboration at the University of Sydney.

The program seeks to build organizational evaluation capacity by enhancing staff skills, knowledge, and confidence in planning and evaluating their own work-based projects. Our findings demonstrate that this approach is both highly effective in achieving its goals and exceptionally cost-effective. Initiatives like this showcase a genuine investment in staff capacity while exemplifying best practice in evaluating workplace interventions.

After 30 years in the field, I am truly honored to share this experience in such a meaningful way with colleagues across the integrated and community health sectors. For those interested, the protocol for our work has been accepted for publication and will be available online soon.

Who I am: Today, I am a woman celebrating another year of life, wisdom, and alignment! Reflecting on these past 11 days, I’ve shared glimpses of who I am—a woman who is a scientist, an artist, a leader, an author, a movement architect, a wife, a mother, and a daughter of the Most High.

I am sustained by God’s grace, fueled by community, and sharpened by love.
People can sometimes get caught up in the many titles and roles I carry, but each one has shaped who I am. Every hat I’ve worn has contributed to the woman I’ve become. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I pause with deep gratitude for the impact made and the lessons learned along the way.
As I celebrate my birthday, 30 years of professional life, and 13 years since earning my PhD, I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey. Thank you for making it meaningful and rewarding—even in the smallest ways.

𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟬 -𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴... | 🐻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗿, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 & 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁
𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗜 𝗮𝗺: Growing up in a very large family taught me the delicate art of human dynamics—knowing when to ebb and when to flow. God gave me a unique grace as a Convenor, with the ability to naturally bring people together around a shared cause or meaningful conversation.
You know you’ve evolved when coaches, politicians, and C-suite executives are asking you to make space in your diary for strategic insight. After 30 years of navigating diverse spaces, I’ve grown into an architect of movements—designing intentional environments where people can connect, align, and thrive.

This year, in particular, has been a strategic launchpad for two global movements.
The Waymaker’s Alliance was born to support professionals and entrepreneurs who desire to faithfully steward Kingdom mandates in the marketplace. This is a vision I have carried for many years, and I am deeply grateful for those who responded when I shared the call.
In addition, another global movement officially launched in April—though it had been incubating for over eight months. During that time, I worked alongside global leaders in public health to strategically develop a platform supporting non-clinical public health and environmental health professionals—providing equitable access to high-level professional development and mentorship for their next level.
The Global Public Health Connect Network is now coming to life, and I am incredibly grateful for the faithful friends and colleagues who have stepped forward to build this vision together. I am excited for what we will continue to create in this space.
I remain deeply humbled and profoundly grateful that I never despised humble beginnings. Truly—look at what the Lord has done!
