Congratulations to our Client of the month - Anna Farr for her wonderful Presentation, delivered this week.
When Anna came to me a few weeks back, I asked her to write and present a 7 minute speech so I could diagnose where she could get the fastest and most effective improvements. This is the first step in our High-Performance Speaker Blueprint.
Anna expected me to show her a few speaking tips to adjust her vocal delivery and how to add some gestures.
To her surprise I requested she completely overhaul the whole speech. I must say that Anna was shocked and a bit hesitant. To make the change she would need to step widely out of her comfort zone.
Anna was brave because she trusted that this was a way to raise her presentation by 50% and not just tweak the edges.
Anna has only had 3 coaching sessions so far and already she has taken her speaking to another level.
On Wednesday night she tested the new speech. Everyone loved it and the feedback praised the areas she had been working on.
Her new structure - personal story combined with a tight message that resonated with the audience was a hit. Anna is thrilled with the outcome so far.
Now that we have the foundations right, we can massage, polish and tighten this and then work on technique and delivery.
Well done Anna - your courage is paying off and your joy and energy has lifted. It is my pleasure to be part of your journey.
As they say in Australia - GoAnna!

The better you are as a speaker, the harder it is to improve.
That’s why good public speakers need coaching the most.
For the same reason the best tennis players and elite athletes have coaches.
Not because they’re bad —
but because they want to get better.
When you’re a beginner, lots of people can give you feedback.
Friends. Colleagues. Family.
“Speak louder.”
“Slow down.”
“You were great!”
And yes — with motivation and practice, you can improve over time.
But this approach breaks down when you’re already good.
Good speakers:
• Don’t have time to waste
• Want faster progress
• Need precision, not encouragement
• Often hear, “Don’t change a thing”
That kind of feedback boosts the ego…
but it doesn’t drive improvement.
This year I worked with a client aiming to win the World Championship.
(Remona Moodley Marais — and she won’t mind me saying this.)
Remona is already a wonderful speaker.
When she asked others for feedback on her best speech so far, most responses were:
“It’s perfect.”
“I wouldn’t change anything.”
“You’re amazing.”
Helpful for confidence — useless for growth.
Imagine Roger Federer asking friends how to improve his backhand.
As an experienced coach, within five minutes I could see at least five specific changes that would elevate her speech and overall speaking skill.
Remona loved that.
Because she didn’t want to be “very good”.
She wanted to be exceptional.
A high-performing speaker who stands out when it matters most.
Federer had three coaches — even after winning 20 Grand Slams.
Why? Because at the top, it’s the small changes that make the biggest difference.
A great coach doesn’t just see what needs fixing.
They also see what’s already working — and what must be protected.
They identify the root cause and know the exact solution.
That’s why you only need a coach
if you want to improve
and take your speaking to the next level.
At B Well Speaking, we help leaders speak with confidence, authority, and impact using our High-Performance Speaker Blueprint.

Being an MC is so much fun. Do you know what it takes to be a good MC?
Today I had the pleasure of helping Harbord Diggers Toastmasters Daytime club with their Humorous Speech and Table Topics contest.
The contestants were fabulous and everyone was happy.
As Contest Chairman for each, the role on paper was to introduce the speakers and interview them.
Good MC’s know that is not enough, it’s just the beginning.
An MC has two main functions -
1. Procedural - introduce people, say where the toilets are and ask for phones to be on silent…
2. Setting the tone - creating the energy, the fun, the excitement. This includes warming up the audience so they are ready to participate in the presenters story.
For me, there is also a third element -
3. Looking after the speakers. The audience wants the speakers to perform at their best. As MC, you can assist this by ensuring they are relaxed, feel welcome, have what they need (water,Mic, lecturn placement) and are respected with correct name pronunciation and credibility defined in their intro.
If you get these right, it is amazing how well the function runs and how delighted people are to be there.
I love doing this - whether it’s weddings or conferences, charity events or speech contests. MC is a very different skill to general Public Speaking and can improve the whole function.
If you want an MC for a function, let me know.
If you want to learn the art of being an MC, let me know.

Monday night - Speaking - Loved it
MC and Speaker duties and just felt in the zone. You know that feeling when you are calm and controlled and ready to entertain.
My topic was - Powerful use of Vocal variety - 20 Mins. For audience engagement I invited members of the audience to join me to demonstrate what works and what doesn’t.
Can you guess the worst Vocal mistake anyone can make when Public Speaking?
