Meet UTS Law graduate Cherie Wright

Cherie loved the practical, hands-on approach at UTS, including being one of the first students to complete UTS’ Practical Legal Training (PLT) - the first university PLT program of its kind in NSW.

Since then, she’s built a career specialising in immigration law and is now a Partner at Vialto Partners and the 2027 Lawyer of the Year in Immigration Law.

The Brennan Program's Ask Me Anything Yarning Circles provide a welcoming and respectful space to deepen your cultural awareness, ask thoughtful questions and engage in meaningful conversations about justice, reconciliation and your future role as a legal professional.

Practical Legal Training (PLT) at UTS gives you the practical skills, knowledge and experience you need to transition from studying law to working in the legal profession. You will develop the confidence to apply what you’ve learned at university to real-world legal practice and prepare for your career as a lawyer.

Completing PLT is an essential step towards admission as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of NSW and, through mutual recognition, can also support admission in other Australian states and territories.

Meet UTS Law graduate Nawid (Sourosh) Cina.

At UTS, Nawid discovered his passion for human rights and refugee law, inspired by the people and experiences he encountered throughout his studies.

That passion has since taken him far beyond the classroom, including helping evacuate more than 100 vulnerable women and children from Afghanistan when the Taliban took control in 2021.

Brennan Program Justice Talk #5 2026: Maritime Refugees & Rohingya crossings of the Andaman Sea: A discussion of the documentary “When the Water Horse Seeks a New Home”

October 7th 2026, Online, 6pm-7:15pm

The lives and experiences of maritime refugees remain largely invisible in public discourse, reduced to statistics or crisis headlines. When the Water Horse seeks a New Home restores their voices and humanity. The documentary traces the human story of displacement, loss, and resilience behind Rohingya maritime crossings of the Andaman Sea, and imaginatively reconstructs pivotal experiences before and after their arrival, creating a space between testimony and creative storytelling.

This Justice Talk will involve an online screening of the 26 minute documentary, which we will watch together. After the film, Associate Professor Gerhard Hoffstaedter (UQ) will join us to explain the situation of Rohingya refugees; the process of making the film and his research on refugees who seek protection through travel by boat as part of the Maritime Refugee Lab project.
