De facto literally means βin fact.β In the legal context, it describes a situation that exists in reality, even if it hasnβt been formally recognised or established by law.
In practice (and outside of practice), a de facto relationship may exist where a couple lives together as partners, despite not being legally married. This is particularly important in areas like family and property law!
