From NSW lawyer to successful entrepreneur, UTS Law alumni, Mark Curry's career journey is a fantastic example of how skills developed through law can open doors well beyond traditional legal practice!

After completing his Juris Doctor at UTS, Mark went on to found Savvy Beverages, an Australian nutrition brand focused on mental wellbeing and cognitive performance. Savvy has since been named the NSW winner of the Outstanding Growth category at the 2025 Telstra Best of Business Awards and a national runner-up.

Mark's legal training has continued to benefit him, helping him build credibility, identify and make the most of opportunities, and support the growth of his business.

Repeated inquiries may not be enough to address corruption in Australia’s construction industry.

In a recent article for The Conversation, Dr Eugene Schofield-Georgeson, Senior Lecturer in the UTS Faculty of Law, examines the newly announced CFMEU Royal Commission and highlights that meaningful change will require a shift in focus from individual wrongdoing to the broader structural forces that allow corruption to persist.

Yet another CFMEU royal commission won’t solve much until we learn from the past This latest inquiry will focus on the construction division of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), the main union representing building workers.

Congratulations to Professor Isabella Alexander on her appointment as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law.

Professor Alexander steps into this role following 14 years of dedicated service to the faculty. Her leadership, vision and commitment to UTS Law make her exceptionally well-suited to guide the faculty into its next chapter.

The faculty also extends gratitude to outgoing Interim Dean Tracey Booth, who has steadfastly led the faculty over the past year with integrity and care. We thank Professor Booth for her significant contribution and wish her every success in her retirement.

The faculty looks forward to the next six months under Professor Alexander’s leadership, as UTS Law continues to strengthen its connection with the UTS Transdisciplinary School and progress across teaching, research and engagement.

Congratulations to our UTS mooting teams on their amazing success at the 2026 ALSA Conference held in Adelaide from 10-17 July 🎉.

The team of Youngone Oh, William Staber and Oscar Platt were runners up in the ALSA Redross International Humanitarian Law Moot and received the award for Best Prosecution Written Submissions.

The Championship Moot team of Cherie Tran, Vincent Aquino and Zachary Boswell progressed to the semi finals and won the prize for Best Respondent Written Submissions.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Genevieve Wilkinson on receiving the Council of Australian Law Deans' Teaching Excellence Award for Engagement. Genevieve was recognised with the Teaching Excellence Award for Engagement, celebrating her leadership in creating innovative learning experiences around technology, law and social justice for students and alumn. 🌟

The CALD Legal Education Awards aim to recognise outstanding teaching practices and contributions to student engagement and research supervision. Genevieve has been instrumental in shaping how UTS Law students explore the intersection of law, technology and social justice. Through her leadership of the UTS Law Tech Challenge, she has helped create an immersive learning experience where students collaborate across disciplines to tackle real-world legal and social challenges using technology. The program encourages students to think beyond traditional legal practice.

She has also led Tech and Social Justice Week, bringing together students, researchers, industry and community partners to explore both the opportunities and the ethical challenges emerging in new technologies in law.

These initiatives have inspired countless students to embrace critical thinking, teamwork and purpose-driven legal practice, while building a remarkably vibrant community committed to using technology to improve access to justice.

This national award is a testament to Genevieve's leadership and dedication to teaching over the years. Congratulations, Genevieve.
