Call for papers International Journal of Architectural Computing - SIGraDi

“Designing Possibilities: Predictions and Projections”

PAPERS DUE April 7th

In times of unexpected global changes, we propose to visualize the convergence of people, information, technology, and matter to define a spatiotemporal field of possibilities driven by data and focused on improving the quality of human life. This International Journal of Architectural Computing Special Issue offers an invitation to advance and envision the post-pandemic opportunities of computational methods in designing and implementing new scenarios for the built environment.

This issue approaches latent possibilities in design, focusing on design predictions and projections. We expect novel and advanced contributions on theoretical and empirical work on the application of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data analytics, advanced information modeling and simulations, and other computational methods to shape the future dynamics of cities, buildings, and systems.

Latent Possibilities: What is the role of computational design in shaping the post-pandemic new scenario?

Predictions: In uncertain times, how can we predict with confidence?

Projections: What are the new opportunities for data-driven design practice?

Architects, designers, scientists, and researchers in related design disciplines are invited to submit complete and original papers that have not been published elsewhere and are not currently under consideration for another journal. Manuscripts must be submitted following the IJAC submission guidelines, using the online system of SAGE IJAC. Please select “special issue” as the paper type and mention “SIGradDi special issue” in the “optional comments” box in the form.

Important dates:
Manuscript submission: April 7th, 2022 (or before. 8 weeks after the call is open).
First decision notification: April 27th, 2022

Dear Authors,

Congratulations on your accepted paper. We are sure that you have worked very hard to reach this stage. Every year, CAADRIA also provides support to students who will need further help to participate in the conference through the Young CAADRIA Award.

The Young CAADRIA Awards are funded by CAADRIA and include sponsorship of conference registration fees and a certificate presented during the conference. Applications are open to full or part-time registered students (PhD-, PG-, or UG-students), applications can be made after having received a full paper acceptance or 'minor review' notification. Only papers with above-stated students as FIRST authors are eligible. The awards will be allocated by a committee jointly formed by CAADRIA, the Paper Selection Committee, and the Conference Host and will be based on the merit of the paper, contribution and relevance to CAADRIA and the demonstrated depth of research interest.

Interested authors will have to prepare the following and send the application to [email protected]:

- Full Name
- Affiliated Institution
- Accepted Paper ID
- A 1-2 pages CV
- A list of at least 3 other published papers and awards (full paper to be attached for consideration)

The schedule for the YCA will be as follows (the website will be updated very soon):

YCA Application Deadline - 31 Jan 2022
YCA Notification - 10 Feb 2022
Early Bird Registration - 14 Feb 2022

Feel free to email to [email protected] if you have further questions.
Thank you and wish you all good luck.

Cheers,
YCA Award Chair

CAADRIA 2022 // POST CARBON // SYDNEY // 9 - 15 APRIL 2022

“POST CARBON”

An increase of the world population to up to 10 billion people by 2050, coupled with a current continued economic growth, digitalisation, and infrastructural expansions in many countries require us to reconsider the global carbon impact.

The consequences of the fourth industrial revolution and resulting climate changes can be directly and physically experienced as phenomena around the globe and by many of us; as coastal and river floods, cyclones, bushfires, air pollution, a decline of resources, and diminished natural habitats.

In the carbon equation, architecture, urban design, engineering and construction play a significant role as buildings produce and consume large amounts of carbon during construction, in the life cycle, and after demolition.

In this context, computational design, simulation, analysis, fabrication, and management allow us to evaluate, understand and forecast trends and consequences of connected impacts across multiple disciplines. In a post-carbon framework, computation can be applied for improving the quality, sustainability, and resilience of the architecture, infrastructures and public resources of the built environment.

Consequently, the conference theme ‘Post Carbon’ seeks profoundly different approaches to identify closer dialogues, better collaboration, increased agency and effective ways to address a world in which climate change has become a reality. We specifically call for papers that address the UN Sustainable Development Goals as we are forced to live with extreme climate, live with limited resources and live with reduced biodiversity.

The 2022 annual conference for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA), will bring together academics, researchers, and practitioners involved in contributing to applying computational design methods, tools, and processes towards achieving a post carbon future of the architecture, engineering and urban design sector.
