Today is International Nurses Day, and as we dive deeper into our May theme of “Leading with Heart,” we look to the nursing profession as the ultimate gold standard for what it means to combine high-level technical expertise with radical compassion.
In the world of careers and leadership, we often talk about "soft skills." But nurses prove every day that compassion is a hard skill—one that requires immense resilience, quick decision-making, and emotional intelligence.
What can every professional learn from the nursing model of leadership?
🌱 Wellbeing as a Foundation: Nurses understand that you cannot pour from an empty cup. They teach us that true professional sustainability requires a balance of intense dedication to others and a disciplined approach to one’s own wellbeing.
🤝 Connections for Mutual Benefit: A healthcare setting is the ultimate collaborative environment. Nurses lead through "mutual benefit," knowing that when the team communicates with empathy, patient outcomes (the "client success") improve exponentially.
🚀 Growth Through Human Connection: In any career, the most significant "turning points" often happen during human-to-human moments. Nurses remind us that being a leader isn't about your title; it’s about the impact you have on the person standing in front of you.
🍎 Learning and Growing Together: Nurses don't just "do a job"; they advocate, they educate, and they empower. As we reflect on our own career strategies this month, let’s ask ourselves: How can I bring a nurse's level of care and advocacy into my workplace today?
To the nurses in our community and beyond—thank you for being the heartbeat of our society and for showing us that compassion truly is the ultimate strategy for success.

"It is the nurturing of mothers that provides the social fabric upon which our entire community is built. Their leadership is often quiet, but it is the most profound."
~ Dame Quentin Bryce

Today is Mother’s Day 💞
Today isn't just about biological titles; it’s about acknowledging the diverse network of women - informal mothers, mentors, aunts, and work moms - who provide the emotional scaffolding for our careers and lives.
Compassion is often a quiet force, yet it is the most powerful catalyst for professional and personal growth.
These are the generous hearts in our lives:
🌱 The Mentors & Informal Mothers: We all have those women who stepped in during a pivotal turning point. They offered the guidance of a mother, the wisdom of a peer, and the belief that we could achieve more than we saw in ourselves.
🤝 Connections for Mutual Benefit: These women teach us that leadership isn't about power; it’s about nurturing potential. By investing their time and heart into our development, they demonstrate the ultimate "mutual benefit"—a legacy of empowered leaders.
🧠 Wellbeing & Resilience: The women who care for us - often while balancing their own complex careers - model the true meaning of resilience. They show us that compassion for others must be balanced with self-care to sustain a life of impact.
Learning and Growing Together 💏 :
A mothering heart is one that sees a gap and fills it with support. In our professional world, we can all adopt this mindset. Whether you are a student, a new graduate, or an executive, you have the capacity to "mother" a project, a dream, or a colleague’s confidence.
To the mothers, the step-mothers, the grandmothers, the mentors, and the women who lead with heart in every room they enter - we see you, and we thank you. You are the original strategists of compassion.

"It takes courage and strength to be empathetic. I refuse to believe that you cannot be both compassionate and strong."

At Turning Point Consulting, we believe the ultimate workplace skill isn’t just your ability to list skills alone. It’s your ability to demonstrate your value through tangible experiences, interests and activities.
Tips for Year 10s: Entering the Conversation with Heart
How do you build a bridge between being a student and becoming a professional? It starts with the intent to understand and present your value.
🧑🤝🧑 Get involved in your life: Find ways to step out of your comfort zone, get involved and find out what you are really capable of.
🏅 Know your value: Back yourself and tell your story in a crisp and succinct manner that demonstrates consistent and meaningful action to grow, learn and be your best self.
🌱 Resume with Character: Your resume gets you the interview and your human connection gets you the role. Highlight your whole self as someone who values mutual benefit and delivers purpose.
Learning and Growing Together The students at Magdalene College showed incredible dedication today. By leading with curiosity and compassion, they are already building the foundation for resilient, meaningful careers.
Remember, Year 10: Your resume is your history, but your ability to connect is your future.

May is Family Violence Prevention Month, a time to acknowledge a difficult reality: for many, the workplace isn’t just where they build a career—it is often their primary place of safety, stability, and support.
Building on our theme of Leading with Heart, compassion in this context goes beyond kindness. It is about awareness, advocacy, and action.
How do Careers, Wellbeing, and Leadership intersect here?
💼 Career Stability as Empowerment: Financial independence is one of the most powerful tools for someone seeking a turning point in their personal safety. As leaders and colleagues, supporting a survivor’s career path is a direct act of empowerment.
🌿 Wellbeing as a Priority: A compassionate culture is one where ""checking the temperature"" of our team’s wellbeing is standard practice. It’s about creating a safe space where people feel seen and supported, not judged, during their hardest moments.
📢 Leadership with Responsibility: Leading with heart means having the courage to implement clear policies, offer flexible support, and educate ourselves on the signs of struggle. It’s about ensuring that no one on our team has to navigate their challenges alone.
Learning and Growing Together:
This month is an opportunity for all of us to learn how to be better allies. Compassion is the ultimate career strategy because it builds the psychological safety required for people to thrive, even when life outside of work is in turmoil.
Support is Available:
If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic or family violence, please reach out for professional support.
1800RESPECT (1800 737 732): Available 24/7 for confidential information, counselling, and support.
In an emergency, always call 000.
Let’s use this month to strengthen our connections and ensure our professional communities are built on a foundation of safety and genuine care.

As we move through May with our theme of "Compassion for Others," this week brings a powerful dual meaning as we recognize National Heart Awareness Week.
In leadership and career strategy, we often talk about "heart" as a metaphor for empathy and kindness. But this week, we’re taking a moment to focus on the physical heart—the engine that powers our ambitions, our resilience, and our ability to show up for others.
Why Heart Health is a Career & Leadership Priority:
📈 Sustainable Performance: You cannot lead others if you are running on empty. Prioritizing cardiovascular health is an act of self-compassion that ensures you have the energy to pursue your professional goals for the long haul.
🧠 The Stress Connection: High-pressure careers and leadership roles can take a toll on our physical wellbeing. Compassionate leadership involves creating work cultures that encourage movement, mindfulness, and regular health checks—reducing the "collective blood pressure" of the team.
🤝 Mutual Support: National Heart Awareness Week is about looking out for those around us. Just as we learn to spot the signs of burnout, learning the signs of heart distress and encouraging our colleagues to prioritize their health is the ultimate act of "Leading with Heart."
Learning and Growing Together:
Compassion means caring for the whole person. This week, let's commit to one "heart-healthy" change—whether it’s a walking meeting, a nutritious team lunch, or finally booking that long-overdue check-up.
When we look after our hearts, we strengthen our capacity to lead, to support, and to empower everyone around us.

Beyond the ATAR: Why Compassion is Your Secret Weapon in Industry 🎓💼
Thank you to the Year 12 cohorts we presented and consulted to over the past few weeks. As the finish line of school approaches and the world of industry expectations starts to feel real, it’s easy to focus solely on grades and technical skills.
Our Turning Point Consulting student workshops equip young people to launch their career not just one what they know, but on how they connect.
Compassion Transforms the Skills of Young People:
🤝 Networking with Heart: Networking isn't about "using" people for a job; it’s about mutual benefit. When you approach a professional with genuine curiosity about their journey and a desire to learn, you aren't just a student—you’re a future collaborator.
🎤 The Empathetic Interviewee: Industry leaders aren't just looking for someone who can do the task; they are looking for someone who fits the team. When you show compassion in an interview—by acknowledging the company’s challenges or showing emotional intelligence in your answers—you demonstrate leadership potential.
🌱 Wellbeing & Resilience: The transition from school to work is a massive turning point.
Leading with heart means having compassion for yourself during the learning curve and supporting your peers as you all navigate the same pressure.
The Industry Expectation: Modern workplaces value Human Connection above all else.
They want people who can listen deeply, support their colleagues, and understand that their personal growth is tied to the growth of the team.
Learning and Growing Togethe: Your professional profile is more than a resume—it’s a reflection of your character.
That mindset is what separates a candidate from a future leader.

Today is International Firefighters’ Day, and as we continue our May theme of “Leading with Heart,” there is no greater example of this than the men and women who run toward the challenges others are running away from.
While firefighting is a masterclass in technical skill and bravery, at its core, it is an act of profound compassion. It’s a career built entirely on the foundation of supporting others during their most vulnerable "turning points."
What can we learn from their leadership and apply to our own careers?
🤝 Mutual Benefit & Trust: In a crew, success is impossible without total trust. Compassionate leaders build environments where every team member knows they are supported, allowing the whole group to perform at their peak.
🌱 Wellbeing Through Service: Firefighters remind us that wellbeing isn't just about self-care; it’s about the resilience we build when we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
📈 Continuous Learning Together: Every call-out is a lesson. By debriefing and growing together, these teams turn high-pressure experiences into shared wisdom—a vital strategy for any professional team.
