Mubarak

My 11-year-old son and I were talking about how Ramadan is almost here, and he asked me, "Have you chosen your goals for Ramadan yet?"

I started to answer, but he quickly cut me off with an apologetic look and said,

"I'm sorry to interrupt you, Mama-- but I wanted to first tell you, please don't tell me everything. Don't share all your Ramadan goals with me so that you can keep some as secrets between you and Allah."

My eyes teared up.

I hadn't expected him to say that, and for some reason, it touched me that he did.

He was referring to this hadith:

قال ﷺ: "مَنِ استطاع منكم أن يكون له خبءٌ مِنْ عملٍ صالحٍ فليفعَلْ."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever is able to have secret good deeds, let him do so."

And this part of another hadith, about the different categories of believers who will get shade from Allah on the Day of Judgment:

"ورجل تصدَّق بصدقة فأخفاها حتى لا تعلم شماله ما تنفق يمينه."

"And a man who gave in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives."

Sometimes we need reminders from our own young children, pointers in the way of sincerity and purity of intention.

In a modern world filled with fakeness, filters, AI artificialness, social media showing off and ostentatious boasting...it brought tears to my eyes to be reminded by my young son to have authenticity, sincerity, purity.

In a world where many people go out of their way to capture their good deeds on camera, it's grounding to remember to have a secret stash of good deeds hidden, known only by you and Allah.

Sometimes we need our children, with their innocence and purity and authenticity, to remind us of this.

This is one of the beautiful things about teaching your children Quran and hadith. Eventually, it comes full circle and your children teach it to you! They remind you of things you know but had forgotten.

May Allah grant us all a blessed Ramadan and help us do good deeds openly and secretly, ameen!
