Many people think that if you read more to a dyslexic then they will acquire the necessary skills and strategies to read. This is a big misconception not founded in any research!What children get from being read to is a sense of connection, a sense of story structure, a wonderful vocabulary, analytical and comprehension skills if asked questions and asked to think about what’s been read. They develop a love of literature and rich language. Alphabetic code, decoding and encoding have to be systematically taught.

Dyscalculia is under diagnosed in schools and children with this disorder often struggle at math and have low self-esteem. October is dyslexia awareness month. In Australia we are behind in effective teaching techniques for these types of learners in our classrooms and they are under identified for interventions. Diagnosis is often seen in the upper primary to high school years in our country, which is not sufficiently good enough as much suffering occurs with these very intelligent learners. While people will become aware of dyslexia in the month of October this will not change current teaching practice for these students. An overhaul of the education system is what's needed. This article presents some interesting insights from dyslexic students on how they learn best.
