At Cambrai Early Learning Centre, we are proud to share our 2026 Reconciliation Week video with our families and community.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In,” reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility. It is about building respectful relationships, learning from one another, acknowledging the histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and working together towards a more united future for all Australians.
At Cambrai ELC, we are all in when it comes to creating an environment where children learn about respect, inclusion, culture, connection and truth-telling from an early age.
This year’s video features the powerful song Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil, with the children from the Birrung Room Senior Group lending their voices to the lyrics. The beautiful artworks showcased throughout the video were created by our Junior Birrungs, Yanada Room and Guwing Room children.
We are so proud of the creativity, collaboration and thoughtfulness shown by all of the children involved. Through music, art and shared learning experiences, our children are developing an understanding of reconciliation and the importance of walking together with respect and understanding.
We hope you enjoy watching this special project as much as we enjoyed creating it together.

We had a special visitor come to kindy and talk about our oceans and all the different creatures that live there. Diver Dave showed us how to use goggles and a snorkel so that we can see under water. He then showed us real sea creatures that can be found in rock pools. We looked at a sea snail, a sea bunny, sea urchins and some different kinds of starfish. 🐚
The children were so excited to see the sea creatures. We also learnt about Port Jackson shark eggs! It was so interesting to find out how the mummy shark lays her eggs. We got to look at other things like sea sponges, shells, fossils and shark teeth. 🦈
After Diver Dave showed us the sea creatures, he let us come and explore ourselves. We got to see and touch the sea creatures in the tank and feel the sponges, shells and fossils. We then got to see a crab running around the mat and each of us gave the crab a pat. 🦀
We went for a treasure hunt in our yard and found a treasure chest under a tree. We opened it up and found so many cool things including jewellery, coins and cups! 💍
Lastly, we had a talk about things that don’t belong in the ocean. Diver Dan showed us some of the things he has found in the ocean that don’t belong there. He has found straws, a sock, a bike pedal and even a serving spoon! We discussed how it is important to use recycle bins and dispose of our rubbish properly so it does not harm the ocean and its creatures. 😊

Meeting of two cultures
Yesterday morning, Ashlea and Lucy had the opportunity to attend the Meeting of Two Cultures at Kamay Botany Bay National Park. This important event commemorates the 1770 first contact between James Cook’s HMB Endeavour crew and the Gweagal community and encourages reflection, respect and connection through Indigenous ceremonies and workshops.
During the event, we heard from Aboriginal Elders, local community members and council representatives who shared cultural stories, knowledge surrounding the areas history. We explored bush tucker and learned about bush mint and its traditional uses, including as a flavouring for salads and other meals, in herbal teas and for its medicinal properties. Sutherland Council's Natural Areas Aboriginal Heritage Officer Graham Avery uses bush mint to season kangaroo meat.
We also heard from Noeleen Timbery, who spoke about the Gweagal spears that were taken by Joseph Banks and James Cook and her work in successfully returning them to community from Trinity College Cambridge.
We were lucky enough to watching the Gamay Dancers perform, sharing the story of the Maridha (sea eagle) through traditional song and dance.
We really enjoyed being part of this experience and felt grateful for the opportunity to listen, learn and strengthen our understanding of Aboriginal culture and connection to Country.
When we returned to Cambrai, we shared our experience with the children. Together, we looked at the bush tucker we collected, learning what it’s called and how it’s used and read a book about belonging, connection and being one human race. We’re looking forward to continuing this learning and can’t wait to plant our bush tucker in the garden!

This morning, we travelled to the town square as part of our excursion to the ANZAC Memorial. Along the way, we paused to observe the soldier on a nearby building and discussed its significance.
Upon arriving at the memorial, Group One laid a wreath created by the children, while Group Two placed a wreath made by Jesse and his Nana. We took time to explore and reflect on the features of the memorial. The children noticed the rosemary surrounding the site, and Meghan explained that it grows on Gallipoli, while Helen shared its historical use for medicinal purposes. We also observed the Australian and New Zealand flags, as well as the plaques and wreaths that had already been laid in remembrance.
We then read the book ANZAC Biscuits, which highlights the contrast between soldiers at war and families at home. The story showed a mother and child baking ANZAC biscuits to send to a soldier, bringing him comfort during difficult times. To extend this learning, we will be making ANZAC biscuits today.
