History Beyond the Classroom; a course at the University of Sydney in which students partner with community organisations to produce major History projects.

Students explore history in action in a variety of contexts and think about different ways of creating and disseminating history other than the traditional research essay that might appeal to a public audience. Students produce an independently framed and original research project drawn from a 10-hour engagement with communities and organisations outside the University. Contact us if you are willi

Taking History Beyond the Classroom: Embedding Public History and Shared Authority into the University Degree 16/02/2026

I’m a bit uncomfortable about self-promotion, particularly in these dark days, but I also have to do my collaborators justice….so, a couple of items coming up, starting with this article in The Public Historian, co-authored with a fabulous former student, Darcy Campbell who has been an inspiration ever since she started her History degree, quite a few years ago now. The article points out what we see as the value of our course, History Beyond the Classroom, a community-engaged public history class that Darcy took - and helped shape. The Department introduced it in 2015, and it has evolved with the input of so many great students and colleagues, way too numerous to mention, but folks like Hannah Forsyth, The Old Parramattan aka Micaela Cameron, Peter Hobbins, Sophie Loy-Wilson, Tanya Evans, Marama Whyte, and James Findlay among many others you all know who you are…..including all our amazing partner organisations over the years! It is so nice to see this out, even if it is long overdue. Thanks everyone, but especially Darcy - without whose conversations, comradeship, research, enthusiasm, and nudges, this article would still not be out!

Free access and link to download for a month, apparently….
