Really proud to share this one π
One of our students went from a C to an A in English in just 6 months of working together.
He's a bright kid and the issue wasn't the content. It was that he'd sit down in an exam, read the question, and not really know where to start. That uncertainty would spiral into panic, and the response he wrote wouldn't reflect what he actually knew.
What changed was learning how to slow down at the start of an exam rather than speed up. We helped him learn how to read a question properly, what the verb is asking, what the scope is, and what a good response actually needs to include.
Skills like that don't get taught explicitly in most classrooms. That's the gap we try to fill with our individualised lessons.
Massive congratulations to him β the result is entirely his π

English Standard is not the easier option. Here's the data π
Only 14% of English Standard students score above 80 in the HSC. For Band 6 (90+), it's less than 1%. But in English Advanced 67% of students score above 80.
A lot of schools push students toward Standard when they're genuinely capable of Advanced. The assumption that it's "safer" or "less stressful" isn't always accurate - and it can seriously limit your ATAR.
If you're in Year 10 right now and picking your subjects - this decision is worth looking into properly before the end of term.
We put together a full guide on exactly this - what to consider and how to figure out which course is actually right for you.

If you have a child in Year 12 this year, this is definitely worth knowing about π
University early entry applications are already open - and some of the earliest deadlines are coming up in July, which is much sooner than many families realise.
Early entry programs allow students to receive a university offer before their ATAR is released. Depending on the university, offers can be based on things like:
β’ Year 11 results
β’ School recommendations
β’ Leadership or extracurricular involvement
β’ Community service, sport, portfolios, or personal statements
β’ Financial or other disadvantage
For a lot of students, receiving an early offer can take a huge amount of pressure off during the final months of Year 12. Having a pathway already lined up before exams and results day can make a real difference to stress and confidence levels.
There are also quite a few different early entry schemes available across universities, all with different requirements and timelines - which is why itβs important to start looking into them early rather than leaving it until later in the year.
Hopefully this helps make the process feel a little less overwhelming for families navigating Year 12 π

Everything Year 12 students need to know about early entry - in one place. π
Some of these deadlines are as close as July. Most students don't look at this until after the HSC. By then some programs are already closed.
Save this and share it with a Year 12 student who needs it π

Year 10 subject selection is open - and we get one question more than any other: should my child pick English Advanced or English Standard?
One thing that surprises a lot of families when they look at the actual data: English Standard is not the 'easier; option.
According to NESA's 2024 statistics, only 14% of English Standard students score above 80 in the HSC - and Band 6 (90+) is achieved by less than 1% of students in the course. In English Advanced, 67% of students score above 80.
That gap is significant. A lot of schools push students toward Standard, sometimes when those students are genuinely capable of doing well in Advanced. The assumption that Standard is the "safer" or "less stressful" choice isn't always accurate - and for students who could excel in Advanced, it can limit their ATAR.
It's worth looking into now rather than rushing it at the end of term. We've put together an in-depth guide on exactly this - what to consider and how to figure out which course is right for your child.
