Right now, there is something truly special happening. Our inland wetlands are brimming with new life this , with tens of thousands of nesting waterbirds making the most of the best breeding conditions in a decade 💦🦆
In Macquarie Marshes, Gwydir Wetlands and Narran Lake Nature Reserve, we’re monitoring dozens of colonies, some with up to 50,000 birds. Ibis, spoonbills, egrets, herons, cormorants and other species are gathering for a mass breeding event, enjoying wetlands filled by heavy rains. We’ve also completed aerial feral animal control and follow up ground programs to help give these birds a better chance of breeding success.
You can experience this incredible event at Waterbird Lagoon bird hide in Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area, about 70km from Moree. 🔗nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/birdwatching-and-wildlife-facilities/waterbird-lagoon-bird-hide ⚠️Roads have reopened after floods but visitors should drive with care, and check Moree Plains Shire road closures before you travel.
National parks protect nearly 10% of the state’s 4.5 million hectares of wetlands, including all 12 of our Ramsar-listed wetlands. 📸 N. Brookhouse / DPE (NPWS)

Communication as a result of the eruption has been difficult, but our defence force team and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working as we speak to establish what’s needed and how we can help. I’ll be giving an update again at 3pm. Till then, I know we are thinking of our pacific friends and family.
