Our First Year actors headed to the zoo to begin one of our favourite parts of their Improvisation training: Animal Work.
The task? Observe an animal, study its behaviour and physicality, and then bring those discoveries back into the rehearsal room.
Animal Work gives actors the opportunity to step outside their own natural habits and explore a completely different way of moving, thinking and responding. Each student is assigned an animal that challenges their usual mannerisms, perhaps something with a different pace, rhythm, energy or physical quality.
Back in the studio, they begin by embodying the animal before gradually transforming those observations into a human character. It’s a playful process, one that asks actors to be incredibly specific, imaginative and physically connected to their work.
