This photo landed in my inbox today from a friend who just received their copy of The Beautiful Struggle.

Years of coaching. Hard conversations. Losing seasons. Cambodia. Football. Leadership. Doubt. Resilience. Failure. Growth.

This book was never meant to be about perfection or pretending we’ve got it all together.

It’s about what struggle can teach us, if we’re willing to stay in it long enough to learn.

If you’ve already bought a copy, thank you. Truly.

And if you haven’t yet, I’d love your support. The book is now available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.

If the message connects with you, one of the biggest ways you can help is simply by sharing this post, posting a photo of your copy, or recommending it to someone else.

Independent books grow because people believe in them enough to pass them on.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside leaders, teams, organisations, NGOs, banks, schools, and football programs across Cambodia, helping build leadership, resilience, culture, and human connection in environments that are often challenging, complex, and deeply rewarding.

What began as a simple desire to support and develop people has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined.

This recognition means a lot because it reflects relationships, trust, partnership, and the incredible people I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and walk alongside over many years.

Very grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey, both in Australia and Cambodia.

And honestly, Cambodia has shaped me just as much as any work I’ve done there.

Congratulations to all the finalists. Looking forward to celebrating together in the coming weeks.

THE BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE

We’ve built a culture in sport that celebrates results. But ignores the process that shapes people. The struggle. The doubt. The failure. That’s where the real work is. That’s where the real leadership is.

“This book is to coaches what Carol Dweck’s Mindset is to parents and educators.” Levi Nelson

“It will help you and your athletes get better every season.” John OSullivan

The Beautiful Struggle is coming soon.

Unlearn: What if the next level of leadership isn’t about learning more, but letting go of what no longer serves you?

More noise won’t fix it. More control won’t solve it. More ego won’t build it.

Sometimes growth begins with release. My new book, Unlearn – The Journey of Bamboo Leadership, explores a different kind of strength. The strength to bend. The wisdom to listen. The courage to change. The presence to lead without needing to dominate the room.

Because some rooms need less of your voice and more of your presence.

Coming soon.

The world is heavy right now. Uncertainty. Pressure. Division. Rising costs. Constant change. Quiet exhaustion.

Many people are carrying more than they show. Many leaders are trying to lead while running on empty themselves.

We are living through a Resilience Recession, where the need for resilience is rising, but our internal reserves are declining. And in response, many of us chase one thing: comfort.

We seek comfort in distraction. Comfort in avoidance. Comfort in quick fixes. Comfort in certainty. Comfort in staying where it feels safe.

But comfort rarely builds what hard seasons require. What we need most right now is not more comfort. We need more capacity.

Capacity to stay calm under pressure. Capacity to think clearly in uncertainty. Capacity to regulate emotion when stress rises. Capacity to hold faith when outcomes are unclear. Capacity to keep showing up when life feels heavy.

This is why resilience matters.

Real resilience is not toughness. It is not pretending. It is not never feeling struggle.

It is the building of inner capacity. Emotional capacity to process stress without being ruled by it. Mental capacity to reframe, adapt and keep perspective. Spiritual capacity to remain grounded in meaning, values and belief.

Maybe the question for leaders, parents, teams and all of us right now is this: Am I chasing comfort or building capacity?

Because comfort might soothe the moment. But capacity carries you through the season. What capacity are you building right now?

Australia vs Cambodia: A Wake-Up Call for Leaders. The latest Gallop workplace data tells an interesting story.

🇦🇺 Australia
Employee engagement: 21%
Daily stress: 50%
Thriving: 55%
Good time to find a job: 64%

🇰🇭 Cambodia
Employee engagement: 18%
Daily stress: 34%
Thriving: 16%
Good time to find a job: 64%

Australia has slightly higher engagement and significantly stronger wellbeing, but stress levels are high. Cambodia has lower stress, but far fewer people say they are truly thriving. Engagement remains a challenge in both countries.

And here’s the key insight: If people don’t feel valued, developed, connected or inspired, they will leave.

What This Means for Leaders: This is no longer about perks, policies or ping pong tables.

It’s about: Trust, Clear leadership, Strong managers, Meaningful connection, Growth opportunities and Healthy culture

The organisations that win the next 5 years won’t simply have the best strategy. They’ll have the most engaged people.

Leadership drives culture. Culture drives engagement. Engagement drives performance.

Why do leaders choose not to invest in their people?

It’s a question I’ve been sitting with lately. Because the data is clear. The need is obvious. The impact is proven.

And yet, many organisations still hesitate. Not because they don’t care. But because of what sits underneath the decision.

- We’re too busy right now.
- Let’s wait until things settle.
- We can’t justify the cost.
- What if they leave after we invest in them?

On the surface, these sound reasonable. But underneath They reveal something deeper: A short-term mindset in a long-term game.

Because here’s the truth: When you choose not to invest in your people, you are still making an investment.

You’re investing in:
• Stagnation over growth
• Survival over development
• Control over empowerment
• Short-term output over long-term capability

And that investment has a return. Just not the one you want. It shows up in:
• Inconsistent leadership
• Poor decision-making under pressure
• Low trust and fragile culture
• High dependency on a few key individuals
• Quiet disengagement (before people eventually leave)

I’ve seen it too many times. Organisations trying to scale, without scaling their leaders. Teams expected to perform, without being developed to handle the pressure. Leaders promoted, without being equipped. And then we wonder why things break. Here’s the shift:

The real question isn’t: “Can we afford to invest in our people?” It’s: “What will it cost us if we don’t?”

In my experience, that cost is always higher. It just shows up later and often when it matters most.

As Khmer New Year arrives, I just want to take a moment to honour and celebrate my friends, colleagues, and community across Cambodia 🇰🇭

Over the years, this country and its people have shaped me more than I could ever put into words. Your resilience, your generosity, your spirit, and your ability to find joy even in the most challenging circumstances continues to inspire me deeply.

I’ve learnt so much from you, about leadership, about perspective, and about what truly matters.

As you step into this new year, my hope is simple: That it brings you peace, strength, opportunity, and continued growth. That you keep rising, keep believing, and keep building something meaningful, for yourselves, your families, and your community.

Thank you for the impact you’ve had on my life. Happy Khmer New Year.

The Reality Leaders Are Facing

I keep having the same conversation with leaders. Not about strategy. Not about performance. But about pressure.

The kind that sits just under the surface. The kind that doesn’t go away when the meeting ends.

Uncertainty. Fatigue. Expectation vs reality. And the question beneath it all:

“How do I keep showing up well when it’s actually hard?”

That’s the space this program was built for. Not theory. Not hype. But real leadership in real conditions.

Over 3 months, we’ll walk through what it actually takes to lead when things don’t go to plan, with leaders from across Asia and Australia, in a space that is honest, practical, and grounded.

Because resilience isn’t just about getting through. It’s about who you become in the process.

If that resonates, I’d love to share more. Get in touch for more information and pricing.

Alignment isn’t a “nice to have” in teams. It’s everything.

I’ve been working with a number of teams lately, and one theme keeps showing up: When alignment is off, everything feels harder than it should.

When leaders and teams are pulling in slightly different directions, you still move … But it’s slow. It’s heavy. It’s uncomfortable.

When alignment breaks down completely and turns into conflict, something more serious happens: Momentum stops. Energy drains. The environment becomes tense, even toxic. And progress? Almost non-existent.

But when alignment is present … Everything changes. There’s clarity. There’s shared ownership. There’s belief.

And suddenly, movement toward the goal feels smoother, faster, even enjoyable.

Here’s the reality: Alignment is not just about agreeing on a strategy. It’s about:
• Shared understanding
• Consistent behaviours
• Clear expectations
• Trust in the direction and in each other

A question for leaders: Are your people just working … Or are they truly aligned? Because the difference between the two is the difference between effort and momentum.
