Morning routines can feel harder than they should.đą
For some children, getting dressed, brushing teeth, or feeding themselves isnât just âbeing slowâ, itâs a real skills challenge.
And when self-care feels hard, everyone starts the day stressed.
Recently we supported a child who found dressing and toothbrushing overwhelming. By breaking tasks into tiny steps and practising through play, those same routines became calmer and more independent over time.
Self-care milestones arenât just about clothes or hygiene. They build confidence, independence, and a childâs belief in âI can do this.â
If self-care routines feel like a daily struggle in your home, youâre not alone đ
We wrote a short blog explaining how occupational therapy supports children to achieve everyday milestones.

đŞ The Magic of Sensory Regulation!
Some children experience the world more intensely than others. Sounds feel louder. Touch feels uncomfortable. Busy spaces feel overwhelming. For many families, this shows up as big emotions, constant movement, or difficulty settling into everyday routines.
This is where sensory regulation comes in.
Sensory regulation is a childâs ability to notice and respond to sensory input in a way that helps them feel calm, focused, and ready to engage. When this is tricky, it can look like:
đż Distress in noisy or busy environments
đż Avoiding certain textures or clothing
đż Constant movement or crashing
đż Difficulty sitting, focusing, or transitioning
đż Big emotional reactions that feel sudden
These are NOT âbehaviour problemsâ! Theyâre signs that a childâs nervous system is working hard.
In childrenâs occupational therapy, sensory regulation is supported through play, movement, and everyday activities. Rather than calming in isolation, we help children understand their bodies and build practical ways to feel âjust rightâ during real life.
At Integral Occupational Therapy, we weave sensory regulation into play-based sessions using purposeful activities and equipment such as swings, deep-pressure tools, tactile resources, and calm spaces. These supports help children learn what their bodies need and how to access it at home, at school, and in the community.
The goal isnât to change who a child is. Itâs to help them feel safe in their body so they can play, learn, and connect with confidence.

Many people ask, âWhat exactly is occupational therapy?â đ¤
Occupational therapy is about helping people do the everyday things that matter to them whether thatâs a child joining in at school, a teenager building independence, or an adult feeling safe and confident at home.
It focuses on real life: routines, movement, emotions, environments, and the small moments that make up each day.
An OT might support a child with play, emotional regulation, or school readiness. For an adult, it might look like finding the right equipment, making home environments safer, or understanding what supports are needed to live well. Sometimes itâs about learning new strategies, sometimes itâs about changing the space around us.
At its heart, occupational therapy is not about âfixingâ people. Itâs about understanding how someone lives, what feels hard, and what matters most, then helping everyday life feel more possible.

Does your child find it hard to join in, take turns, or speak up when something feels tricky? Youâre not alone đ
Social skills are the everyday tools children use to play, share, solve little problems, and connect with others. These skills grow best when children feel safe, supported, and free to try again.
At home, small moments make a big difference:
⨠Play alongside first, then gently together
⨠Model simple phrases like âCan I join?â
⨠Notice the effort: âI saw you waitâthat was thoughtful.â
Childrenâs OT helps turn these moments into confidence through playful, real-life practice.
Read our latest blog to learn more about how social skills grow, and how you can support them at home.

Routine, Calm & School Readiness đ§
We have spoken about emotional readiness when returning to school. It is because change can feel hard, especially for many autistic children. Routine and predictability act as anchors, helping children feel safe, calm, and ready to join in. When a day has a clear rhythm and fewer surprises, thereâs less âunknownâ to worry about and more energy for learning, play, and connection.
âWhy routine and predictability matterâ
đ§ It supports emotional readiness by sending safety signals (âI know this, Iâm okayâ),
đ§ It clarifies what comes next, and building confidence through familiar steps.
đ§ Repeating familiar steps builds success. Small wins add up and make transitions smoother.
â¨Gentle ways to build routine at homeâ¨
đĄPreview the day with a simple visual plan
đĄUse transition cues like a timer, song, or picture card
đĄExpect tired afternoons for the first week. Keep afterâschool quiet and celebrate effort over outcomes.
Do mornings, drop-offs, or classroom transitions feel tough? At Integral Occupational Therapy, our children OTs start by listening to what feels tricky and what already works for your family. Together, we create simple, ready-to-learn routines for home and school, share practical tools, and partner with teachers so strategies feel natural.
We celebrate small wins because they build big confidence.

đ Starting the New Year with Integral Occupational Therapyđ
A new year brings fresh beginnings, and in 2026 weâre proud to continue supporting families through our childrenâs occupational therapy (paediatric OT) services at Integral Occupational Therapy. đ
We know the start of a school year can be exciting, but it can also bring big feelings and new challenges.
Emotional readiness is your childâs ability to manage emotions, cope with transitions, and feel safe enough to learn, participate, and connect at school.
Emotional readiness may look like:
đĄ Settling more quickly after upsets
đĄ Coping with small changes to routines
đĄ Asking for help when things feel tricky
đĄ Managing classroom noise or movement
đĄ Feeling comfortable joining in with peers
At home, gentle strategies can help, such as
đ Previewing the week together
đ Talking positively about school
đ Practising drop-offs
đ Supporting co-regulation ... and so on!
We are here if you need extra help!
