Young children are constantly learning about their bodies, relationships and personal boundaries through play, observation and everyday interactions. The way adults respond to children’s questions and behaviours can shape whether children feel safe, confident and able to speak openly.
Using clear, correct language for body parts, modelling respectful interactions and teaching children that they can say “no” to unwanted touch all help build a strong foundation for consent, body safety and healthy relationships. Calm, matter-of-fact responses also reduce shame and help children understand that curiosity about bodies is a normal part of development.
Everyday moments such as asking before giving a hug, respecting another child’s boundaries or redirecting behaviour gently can become powerful opportunities for learning, trust and connection.
Thank you to The Children and Young People Sexual Safety (CYPSS) Unit from Sydney Children’s Hospital Network for sharing their thoughts on this important topic in a recent article for our Amplify! newsletter.

Dear members: Rattler issue 151 is now available in the member hub and member resource library.
In this edition, we bring together a diverse range of voices and perspectives that celebrate the depth and complexity of early childhood education and care today.
From research and advocacy to lived practice, each article invites us to consider how our decisions, relationships and environments shape outcomes for children, families and the workforce.
You will hear from services like Gilgandra Preschool, where place and community influence learning in meaningful ways, and explore insights that challenge us to move beyond tokenism, strengthen child safety through critical reflection, and place children firmly at the centre of practice. This edition also turns our attention to early education professionals, exploring belonging and wellbeing for educators, supporting neurodivergent staff, and rethinking pathways from placement to profession.
We invite you to spend time with this edition of Rattler and hope the stories and ideas within prompt reflection, spark conversation, and support you in your ongoing commitment to quality, inclusive and child-centred practice.
As always, we welcome your feedback and questions, contact us on 1800 157 818 [email protected]

Help shape the future of professional learning in early childhood education and care.
We’re asking ECEC leaders to share what training and professional learning matters most to them, and what they’d like to see improved or introduced.
The survey is for services that currently invest in external professional learning, whether regularly or occasionally. It doesn’t need to be through CELA.
It takes around 10 minutes to complete, and everyone who completes the survey and answers the final question will go into the draw to win one of these prizes:
• $1,000 worth of CELA training
• $750 Visa eftpos gift voucher
• $250 Visa eftpos gift voucher
Your feedback will help us better understand what the sector needs and how we can support services with practical, relevant and valuable professional learning.
Complete the survey before 11pm AEST on Friday 5 June 2026.
Terms and conditions apply.

Children are constantly learning from the language they hear around them. Through everyday conversations, they learn how to express emotion, solve problems, build relationships and understand themselves and others.
Small shifts in the way we communicate can create powerful opportunities for learning. Extending vocabulary, modelling respectful interactions, valuing home languages and responding thoughtfully to emotionally charged language all help shape children’s sense of belonging and identity.
As Professor Sheila Degotardi explained in a recent article for our Amplify! blog: “Children are not only learning language. They are learning through language.”
Reflect with your team: how does the language used in everyday interactions shape children’s learning, identity and belonging?

Creating a child-safe culture is not just about policies and compliance. It’s about the everyday leadership practices that help educators feel confident to speak up, ask questions and act when something doesn’t feel right.
In a recent Amplify! article, CELA RTO Manager Aline Majado shared practical ways ECEC leaders can strengthen a culture where children’s safety and wellbeing remain the priority every day.
Here are three practical tips to consider at your service:
• Normalise conversations about concerns so educators feel safe to ask questions and raise worries early.
• Make reporting pathways clear and practical with visible flowcharts, regular training and consistent processes
• Support, don’t scrutinise, when concerns are raised. The way leaders respond shapes whether educators will speak up again.
When leaders model integrity, listen without judgement and embed child safety into everyday practice, services move from compliance to culture.
