Di**le on 3 is just like Di**le on 1 (check out the previous Hybrid Rudiment we posted) but with the di**le (double stroke) on the third note of each triplet grouping. Compare the two rudiments. How does the placement of the di**le affect the nature of the sound?

Lesson 25 is called that because it’s the 25th lesson in Gardiner A. Strube’s Drum and Fife Instructor. This military rudiment book from 1869 contains 25 rudiments, tips on how to effectively play those rudiments, explanations of musical terms, as well as a whole trove of military drum signals. Though this book is quite old-fashioned, it is still worth checking out as a historical curiosity.

The Eleven Stroke Roll combines single and double strokes into triplet groupings. The basic structure is:
✅ First triplet group opens with an accented single followed by two double strokes (RLLRR)
✅ Second triplet is a sequence of unaccented doubles (LLRRLL)

‘Di**le’ is the drum slang term for ‘double stroke.’
Di**le on 1 is a simple exercise involving two triplet groupings where the first note of each is an accented double stroke.

Compare this rudiment to the Cheese (see yesterday's reel). Do you see how they’re pretty much the same thing? Note how much of a difference a tiny change like a di**le on the first note can make. What do you feel changes about the character of the sound?

🧀 A ‘cheese’ is basically just a flam accent with a double stroke (also known as a ‘di**le’) on the accented note.

What’s your REAL goal with drum rudiments?

It’s easy to get fixated on hitting 200 BPM, but that often comes at the cost of what truly matters: technique, clarity, and control.

This post is a reminder to shift your focus. To practice with intention, listen actively to every stroke, and be honest with yourself. Real progress happens when you slow down, relax, and perfect the details. Speed will follow as a natural result of great technique, not the other way around.

We built the Drum Rudiments app with this philosophy in mind. It’s designed to help you:
✅ Track your progress based on control, not just speed.
✅ Hear every articulation clearly with our custom audio engine.
✅ Build consistent habits with focused playlists.

Ready to practice smarter? Tap the link in our bio to download the app and start your journey to total control.
