VIRTUAL STUDIO VISIT - WEEK 10 WITH ARTIST/TUTOR Susan Baran

These photos are of me working on my latest print. They are from a series of prints based on my travels to Bali that will be exhibited at Manly Art Gallery and Museum, next year with the Sydney Printmakers.

I don’t actually have a studio at home and usually access printmaking studios at Sydney College of the Arts and Warringah Printmakers Studio . However these studios are currently closed due to the Covid-19 shutdown restrictions and I was unable to use them. I can do smaller prints at home on my portable etching press the Enjay RP12 but I do need to access a proper printmaking facility for my larger work. So last week I did a work trip to Baldessin Press to start on this new body of work.

Fortunately, I had the entire studio to myself so social distancing was possible and I safely stayed on the property just outside of Melbourne in the bush setting of St Andrews. It was a very productive residency and I am very happy with this print. In the photos you see I’m am printing and then hand colouring the prints with watercolours and watercolour pencils.
Do come and visit our studio at 29B Innes Rd Greenwich if you're nearby on November 2/3, and catch up with me, Rhonda Nelson and Anthea Boesenberg

New WPS member Marie Scmhmitt with her first linocut during Rebecca Baird’s Monday morning class. The 3rd photo shows the first proof, last photo shows the print with chine-collé. Gorgeous work!! 🙌 [What is chine-collé you ask? It’s a printmaking process where you place thin paper between the printmaking paper and the plate; using glue it fuses to the printmaking paper after being run through the press. Often beautiful coloured or textured paper is used, and can provide lovely background colour or texture to the whole image or part of the image].
