PART 2 | Creating with Sinamay for Avant-Garde Hair

Sinamay is one of those materials I love to use in avant-garde hair.

Pull it apart, shred it, shape it, mix it through synthetic or natural hair and suddenly you can create incredible texture, volume and structure.

What I love most is that it can almost disappear into the hair while quietly doing all the work behind the scenes, giving strength and support to shapes that would otherwise be difficult to hold.

It’s all about experimenting with unexpected materials and discovering what they can do.

PART 1 | Creating with H**p Fibre for Avant-Garde Hair

Avant-garde hair is about thinking beyond the obvious.

When I’m creating height, structure and exaggerated shapes, I often look for materials that can support the hair while still having a hair-like quality.

H**p fibre is one of my favourites. It’s strong, coarse, easy to manipulate and can create incredible structure without collapsing. It can be shredded, shaped and sprayed into place, making it perfect for supporting those bigger avant-garde silhouettes.

This herringbone setting pattern is my guaranteed, foolproof method for creating control, direction and movement for a seamless Hollywood finish.

Behind the look ✨

Why I love a herringbone set? ⬇️

The herringbone set is one of the most versatile setting techniques you can master.

Created using diagonal partings with alternating roller direction, it minimises visible separations at the roots when the hair is brushed through, resulting in a beautifully seamless finish.

This alternating pattern also forms the foundation of a traditional finger wave, producing a strong, defined wave movement with exceptional control.

It’s a technique I return to time and time again because it consistently delivers soft, flowing waves with a guaranteed, beautifully sculpted result.
