Gawura School is K to 6 day school in Sydney's CBD for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander, on Gadigal Land

Gawura started in 2007 occurred in response to the overwhelming evidence of underachievement and social disadvantage among people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin. In 2020 Gawura was named the Australian School of the Year.

“We were supported to succeed while staying connected to who we are.”
– Gawura First Nations Scholarship Alumna

When Gawura School was established, Pastor Ray and Auntie Sharon Minniecon envisioned a school where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from urban Sydney could access a high-quality, culturally authentic education—one that strengthened their connection to culture, land, sea and sky - while continuing to live with their families.

As we approach our 20th birthday, we are proud to know that this vision remains at the heart of Gawura School and continues to be what sets our school apart today, creating a strong foundation for our students to succeed.

Last week, our First Nations students from Gawura School and St Andrew's Cathedral School were invited to attend and be flag orderlies for the Returned Services League Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans Commemoration Service at the cenotaph in Hyde Park.

Our students Josh, Balan, Antonia, Jax, Mizpah and Winda performed their duties with respect and pride, along with Samara, BJ, Latrell, Marlon, Bryden and Quaelah. Thank you

They are pictured here with Aunty Sharon Minniecon assisting with laying the wreath, Uncle Danny Eastwood (artist who designed the Indigenous cenotaph) and Margery Evans, CEO of Independent Schools NSW

We acknowledge the deep respect shown throughout the occasion by our students, honouring the soldiers, their service and heritage, and the values shared by our school community.

What does Reconciliation Week and the theme of "All In" mean for our Gawura School and St Andrew's Cathedral School Junior School students? Their artwork shares it beautifully.

Gawura School at ASISSA Cross Country.

Despite the rain clouds, to was wonderful to see Bokhara (Year 6), Leila (Year 5), Billie and Bronte (both Year 3) participate. Well done girls. You all did amazingly well.

National Sorry Day is an important opportunity for our Gawura School and St Andrew’s Cathedral School community to reflect, listen and acknowledge the ongoing impact of the Stolen Generations on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is a day grounded in truth-telling, healing and restoration - recognising the strength and resilience of First Nations communities, while recommitting ourselves to walking together with respect, understanding and hope.

At Gawura School, we see every day the power of connection, culture and community in shaping strong futures for our First Nations students. Through education, relationships and shared learning, we continue to build a community where culture is celebrated, voices are heard and restoration is lived in meaningful ways.

Watch out for Marlon (Year 8 ) who is going to be a part of the Australian Rules Football - Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round!

Marlon was introduced to AFL through the Paul Kelly Cup at Gawura School and later selected for the Sydney Swans First Nations Academy.

Marlon said about his first ever game “By the last quarter, I gave myself a small pep talk and focused on doing the basics properly. After that, I started playing really well." Amazing effort Marlon!

Read about Marlon's journey here. https://play.afl/nswact/news/sir-doug-nicholls-round-spotlight-marlon-wakarla-coulthard

Congratulations Marlon! My favourite part of this story is how your dancing pursuits can also be interwoven into your AFL training and experience.

To all our Aunties, Mums, Elders and caregivers in our community, we see you lifting us up, protecting us, sharing your knowledge and deep wisdom, and holding our communities strong.

Today, we honour the love, care and strength that surrounds our young people every day. It takes all of us to nurture our pod, the next generation, and we are grateful for all that you give, today and everyday.

Last weekend Anthony, Zavier, Graham, BJ & Marlon - our Junior AFL team - totally dominated in their game against Barker College.

Our boys are training hard, working as a team and developing their skills.

Who’ll be on the sidelines this weekend backing them as they take on their next opponents? See you there!
