“I made Australia my new home.” Monikuntala

With the support of her teacher and the Navitas Skilled Futures community, Monikuntala overcame her fear of speaking English, built new friendships and became more connected to her community.

Since completing her course, she has continued developing her skills through further training in security, first aid and food handling. She has gained work experience, started her own catering business and continues to give back to her community through volunteering at Vinnies.

From rebuilding her life in Australia to regaining her independence, Reem’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and lifelong learning. After arriving as a refugee from Gaza, Reem joined the SEE Program to strengthen her English, digital skills, and confidence. Today, she independently navigates public transport, has secured her own housing, and is working towards returning to the field she loves.

On 16 June 2026, Navitas nominated three students for the Geoff McPherson Canberra Refugee Support (CRS) Education Awards, recognising outstanding refugee students building their future through education.

Among the recipients was Zainab Gholami (Cert II EAL, Canberra), whose journey reflects resilience, courage, and the power of education and support in creating opportunity. For Zainab, the award marked a meaningful milestone in her journey in Australia, supported by a teacher who encouraged her to keep going and believe in herself.

Sonia arrived in Australia from India with teaching and admin experience, but had to start again in a new job system she didn’t yet understand. Through the Navitas Skilled Futures SEE Program, she rebuilt from the ground up.

She now works as an Admin Clerk at Harvey Norman and is building her career in Australia.

Mahboba arrived in Australia in July 2025 and joined Navitas Skilled Futures SEE Program soon after to improve her English and build confidence in daily life.

With support from Navitas, Mahboba has grown more independent, gaining her learner driver licence, attending medical appointments, using online tools, and managing daily tasks with confidence.

Mahboba is now more confident in speaking English and living independently, and is working towards her goal of becoming a midwife in Australia 💚
