A new term begins!

In just one month, so much has already changed. A baby reaching further, moving with more intention, meeting the world with a little more certainty.

But the thing that truly stayed with me wasn't only the baby's progress. It was the mother's.

A little more relaxed. A little more trusting. A little more sure of her own instincts.

This is the part nobody tells you about in the early years as the child grows in capability, the parent grows in confidence.

The two are woven together.

A small moment in a toy shop that my husband and I couldn't stop thinking about.

A little girl, maybe four or five, found a wooden rocking horse tucked under a shelf. She took it out, rocked happily for a few minutes, then climbed off and put it back exactly where she found it completely on her own.

And that's what stayed with me. Why is a child being trusted to play in peace, and tidy up on her own, the most surprising thing we saw all day? Why is this the

No adult said "stop." No adult said "be careful." No adult said "hurry up" or "put that back." She was simply trusted to explore, given the time to finish, and she cared for the thing she used without being told to.

We looked at each other, genuinely surprised. Not because it was dramatic but because it was so rare.

Why is this an exception and not the norm?

This shouldn't be a one-of-a-kind moment. It should be ordinary.

What would it take to make it ordinary where you are?

Everything about raising children is supposedly being constantly updated new research, new methods, new experts every week.

And yet a small child learning to use a real tool, guided by a patient adult who trusts them, was right 15 years ago, was right 100 years ago, and will be right long after today's trends are forgotten.

How much of what we chase as "new" is just noise and how much of what children need has been quietly true all along?
