Get further information about the Cedar DNS-2 from our team today!

"I used it once and bought it immediately - it is that good".

Canberra-base film and TV audio specialist David Springan-O'Rourke has reviewed the CEDAR DNS 2 dialogue noise suppressor in the October 2020 issue of CX Magazine.

He began by writing, "I became aware of CEDAR's DNS dialogue noise suppression product when I saw the eight channel DNS 8 in a trade magazine. I immediately thought it was an interesting bit of kit. I then spotted the DNS 2 on the web and had to try it out. I spoke with Australian distributors CDA Pro Audio, who sent me a demo unit. I used it once and bought it immediately - it is that good."

"In TV, regardless if it's a live interview on location or you're in the studio with some control over the setting, noise happens. There can be noisy kids, road noise, running water, or air conditioning, and they're all outside of your control. You can't keep saying 'stop, we have to redo that' unless you have a Hollywood-sized budget and the ability to put the whole environment into lockdown. Previously, there was no real way to achieve the results the DNS 2 gives me. With the DNS 2 I was instantly able to put it in-line with my kit and dial in the noise reduction. It was startlingly effective."

His review concluded, "If I can have a device in my kit that makes me look better on the day, it's worth it. It puts some distance between me and tricky situations. For example, only a week ago, I was working on a commercial shot in a working hospital, so there was no control over the environment at all. It was a classic 'bathroom cavern' type acoustic to work in, but the DNS 2 cleaned up the noise and reverb straight away; I didn't even have to think about it. Devices like the DNS 2 are time-savers, and save you from getting in people's faces, saying it sounds bad and we have to stop - you can just do the job. It sounds like self-interest, but if a device can simplify workflow and produce a better result, I'm very happy. It just makes everything easier for everyone."

Echo...? What echo?

Sound recordist Adam Thomas had difficulties on location with a highly reverberant and echoey room. So he solved the problem using CEDAR. He told us, "This was my first time using a CEDAR DNS 2, which I hired from another sound recordist. I didn't get to recce the location, but the director told me it had a lot of reverb and that they weren't able to do much in regard to dampening the room. I turned to the DNS 2, and was super impressed with the results. I want one now. It’s a great piece of kit.”

Location sound mixer Tyler Faison using the CEDAR DNS 2 for a shoot on a building site

He told us, “We spent a lot of time on a corporate client’s active manufacturing sites all over the world, so we used the DNS 2 to help mitigate the background noise and get great audio without stopping their production lines. It did awesome! It’s kind of mind-boggling how good it is.”

PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT: Introducing CEDAR for Pyramix 64 v8

We are delighted to announce the immediate availability of CEDAR for Pyramix 64 v8 which, as well as offering improvements in other modules, delivers all of the benefits of the latest machine learning and AI capabilities of Retouch 8™ to the Pyramix platform.

CEDAR invented spectral editing but, not content to leave things as they were, we have continued to research ways to improve it, making it faster and easier to use, able to cure a more extensive range of problems, as well as making it even more productive in a wider range of settings.

For example, there are many occasions when you will encounter similar instances of unwanted sounds in a track - things such as hi-hat spill, over-excited sibilants and plosives, or even the repetitive noise caused by a piece of machinery. Until now, one would remove these by identifying each event individually and then defining it manually, but today you can mark one of the offending sounds and then ask the machine learning algorithm in Retouch 8 to find all of the other instances within the recording. You can then eliminate them individually or as a group using the appropriate Retouch tool. The increase in productivity is absolutely remarkable. In addition to this, the AI in the new Repair tool can identify, suppress, or reveal sounds while leaving the background in a marked region untouched. Unlike other spectral editing tools, only the significant signal within the region is processed; all low level signals as well as the ambience are left unaffected.

Availability and pricing
CEDAR for Pyramix 64 v8 is available immediately. Pricing is available from CEDAR or your local Merging Technologies offices and dealers, as are details about upgrading from previous versions of CEDAR for Pyramix.
