We are sharing an important alert from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) regarding a recent increase in scams targeting international students, especially those nearing graduation or preparing to return home.
Key Details:
• Criminal syndicates are approaching international students with offers of “quick cash” or commissions (typically $200–$500, plus a 10% commission) in exchange for access to their Australian bank accounts and identity documents (such as passports, driver’s licences, or government-issued ID).
• These scams are linked to money laundering and the misuse of personal information for criminal purposes.
What You Need to Do:
• Please share this warning with all your students, particularly those about to graduate or return overseas.
• Raise awareness among your education and migration agent colleagues to help prevent students from becoming victims.
For Your Students – How to Stay Safe:
• Never share your banking or personal details with anyone you don’t know or trust.
• Do not allow anyone to use or “borrow” your bank account for any reason.
• If an offer sounds suspicious or too good to be true, reject it immediately.
If a Student Becomes a Victim:
1. Stop all communication with the scammer.
2. Contact your financial institution immediately if you have transferred money or notice unusual account activity.
3. Report the incident to police using ReportCyber.
4. Report suspected scams to ScamWatch to help protect others.
5. If you believe your identity has been compromised, contact IDCARE for support.
6. For emotional support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 (available 24/7).
For further information, please refer to the AFP’s urgent warning.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and informed. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or require further guidance.
