How many hairs are actually on your head?
On average, the human scalp has 80,000–150,000 hairs — but it’s not the same for everyone…
Hair colour can make a surprising difference:
• Blonde: ~120,000–150,000 hairs
• Brown: ~100,000–120,000 hairs
• Black: ~80,000–100,000 hairs
• Red: ~70,000–90,000 hairs
So if you’ve ever felt like you’re “losing more hair than someone else”… it might just be that you started with more to begin with.
And remember — we naturally shed 50–100 hairs per day as part of the normal hair cycle.
Understanding what’s normal vs what’s not is where trichology really matters.
Not sure if your hair shedding is within a normal range?

Are you taking weight loss injections… but noticing more hair in your brush?

Medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro are changing lives — but they’re also triggering unexpected hair shedding in some patients.

Before you panic — this is usually not usually permanent hair loss.
What you’re likely seeing is telogen effluvium — a temporary shedding phase caused by stress on the body.
And the real trigger isn’t always the drug itself… it’s what comes with it:
• Rapid weight loss
• Low protein intake
• Nutrient deficiencies (iron, zinc, B12, vitamin D)
• Hormonal and metabolic shifts
Here’s the part most people miss:
The shedding often shows up 2–3 months later — so it feels random, but it’s not.
Some emerging research is also looking at changes in connective tissue strength, which may play a role in follicle support.

What it looks like:
• Hair everywhere (shower, brush, floor)
• Overall thinning (not patches)
• Finer, more “see-through” hair
• No permanent damage to the follicle
The good news:
This type of hair loss is usually reversible.
Once your body stabilises and deficiencies are corrected, regrowth typically follows.

This is Malassezia globosa - a yeast that naturally lives on the scalp.

But when it overgrows, it can lead to:
• Dandruff
• Seborrhoeic dermatitis
• Itching and inflammation

M. globosa feeds on sebum (scalp oil), breaking it down into by-products that can irritate the scalp and disrupt the skin barrier.

That’s why symptoms are often worse in oily scalp environments.

It’s not just “dry scalp” — and treating it incorrectly can make things worse.

Understanding what’s happening at a microscopic level is key to managing scalp conditions effectively.

“My hair has never been the same since I stopped the pill.”
This is something trichologists hear regularly — and it’s not imagined.
Hormonal contraception influences the hair growth cycle. When it’s stopped, the hormonal shift can trigger telogen effluvium or reveal an underlying genetic hair loss pattern.
It’s also important to know that not all contraceptive pills affect hair in the same way.
Some formulations are considered more hair-friendly, while others may be less so — particularly for individuals with a genetic sensitivity to hormonal hair thinning.
This doesn’t mean the pill has “damaged” the hair. It means the type of pill, timing, and individual biology all matter.

If you’ve noticed hair changes while starting, stopping, or switching contraception, a Certified Trichologist can help assess whether hormones may be playing a role — and guide appropriate next steps. Click the link in our bio to find a certified trichologist in your area.

🔬 What role does DHT play in female pattern hair loss?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone derived from testosterone that can contribute to hair follicle miniaturisation in genetically sensitive individuals. Over time, this process leads to thinner, shorter hairs and a gradual reduction in density — often most visible along the crown and part line.

While DHT is one factor, female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is multifactorial — influenced by genetics, hormones, and age.

A Certified Trichologist can assess contributing factors and guide you toward evidence-based treatment options.

Cold capping is one of the few clinically supported options available to help reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss.
By cooling the scalp during treatment, blood flow and metabolic activity within the hair follicles are reduced — which may limit the amount of chemotherapy reaching the follicle.
It’s not a guarantee, and it’s not suitable for everyone. But for many patients, it can make a meaningful difference in hair retention, regrowth, and emotional wellbeing during a very challenging time.
As Trichologists, understanding these options allows us to better support clients through every stage of their hair loss journey — including medically related hair loss.

If you or someone you care for is preparing for chemotherapy, speak with your medical team about whether cold capping may be appropriate.
And if you’d like to learn more about supporting hair loss in clinical settings, explore our trichology training pathways.

MYTH: Poor hygiene causes head lice.

FACT: Head lice have nothing to do with cleanliness.

Lice spread through close head-to-head contact and can affect anyone — regardless of how often the hair is washed.
Stigma and misinformation often cause more distress than the infestation itself. Accurate education leads to faster, calmer, more effective management.

Save this post and share it to help break the stigma around head lice.
