This is why not-for-profit services must be supported to stay opened! We abide by regulations and law and the National Quality Standards. Children’s care & safety is of most importance not driving a profit.
Nine childcare centres across Australia are at risk of losing taxpayer funding after failing to meet new federal safety standards by the government’s February deadline.
The action is part of sweeping reforms introduced by the Albanese Government last year following shocking reports of child abuse and serious safety failures in parts of the early education sector.
More than 60 services were placed on notice in August to lift their standards. Of those, 19 are now compliant, one centre has closed, and another is awaiting assessment. But nine services have failed to improve, with the Department of Education now considering “next steps” — including suspending or cancelling their approval to receive the Child Care Subsidy.
Education Minister Jason Clare said the laws were designed to force improvements in the sector.
“The threat of cutting off funding has forced centres to act,” he said, adding that nothing is more important than keeping children safe.
From Friday, major new measures take effect:
🔹 A national childcare worker register is now mandatory, with services required to submit workforce details within four weeks and update changes within 14 days. Failure to comply can attract fines of up to $34,200. The federal government has invested $45 million into the system.
🔹 Mandatory child safety training must be completed by all existing staff within six months, and by new staff within 14 days of employment. The training, developed by the Australian Centre for Child Protection, is also compulsory for company directors and centre leaders. More than 100,000 staff have already registered.
Early Childhood Education Minister Jess Walsh said the reforms will help educators recognise and report abuse, ensuring safer environments for children.
The crackdown also targets controversial “under-the-roof” staffing ratios, where educator-to-child ratios were calculated across an entire service rather than room by room. Education ministers across all states and territories have agreed to close this loophole and clarify what constitutes “adequate supervision”.
Meanwhile, Attorneys-General are set to meet to discuss the rollout of a national working with children check system, with a pilot already available for states and territories to join.
The reforms mark one of the most significant overhauls of Australia’s early childhood education and care sector — with child safety firmly at the centre.
