10 years of volunteering- Rhiannon Bowman

Today, we celebrate Rhiannon, who in ten years, has taught across grades and in different schools, and therefore, has seen every kind of class situation possible.
Rhiannon says, " I feel very fortunate to have become an ethics teacher in my retirement! It has been a richly rewarding experience in every aspect. I look forward to my lessons & to interacting each week with students of various ages and stages.The program is excellent in its range, depth and breadth. It’s wonderful to observe the engagement of the students & the ways that their skills and understandings develop over time. "

Rupert Standley gained much more than he first expected when he became an ethics volunteer almost a decade ago. He credits his volunteering experience with helping him return to the workforce.

17 years of volunteering in this frame!
Area manager and school liaison officer Tatar met up with ten year volunteer and ethics coordinator Loretta, and seven year volunteer Michael. We hear it was a lovely post lesson chat about high school ethics at Hunters Hill High School.

Some coffee catch-ups are about much more than coffee.

Our amazing ten-year volunteer and coordinator of not one, but two ethics teams, Ken Welsh, recently brought everyone together for a lovely catch-up after lessons. Ken was joined by area Manager Feyza and COO Laura.

These photos capture something we really value at Primary Ethics—the camaraderie between volunteers. Some have been with us for ten years; others are just starting their journey. Yet everyone has something to share: ideas, tips, experiences, plenty of laughter and, of course, plans for the year ahead.

And perhaps our favourite part? Those smiles!

We’re so grateful for the wonderful community our volunteers create—one conversation, one lesson and one coffee catch-up at a time.

10 years of volunteering- Kenneth Welsh

Today, we celebrate Ken, who started with teaching his grandchildren ethics at their school in the Iron Cove area,and has moved into the coordinator role in recent years.
Ken says, "If anyone has doubts about whether teaching Ethics has long term benefits, I would urge them to persevere. My granddaughter is now in year 10 and my grandson in year 6. I am very proud of the way they have learnt to ask questions and seek reasons in their every day lives. I have no regrets about my ten year involvement as a volunteer with Primary Ethics."

The best part of volunteering is discovering that you’re not doing it alone.

For Belinda, the sole ethics volunteer at her school, it was a not-so-common opportunity to meet other volunteers from the area at a meetup organised by area manager Marbecc. It was a special day for another reason- Belinda received her seven-year pin and certificate.
Congratulations, Belinda, on seven wonderful years with us!

We’re so pleased to see photos of our long term volunteers from the regions outside Sydney metro. We know that delivering ethics in regional areas can come with different challenges, which makes the commitment, connection and support of our regional volunteers all the more important.

Some volunteers make an impact in ways that reach far beyond the classroom — and Rose-Anne Manns is one of them.

For an incredible 15 years with Primary Ethics, Rose-Anne has taken on many roles: primary and high school ethics teacher, teacher trainer and mentor. Along the way, she has shared her knowledge, supported fellow volunteers and helped strengthen the program for the benefit of countless students.

As Rose-Anne puts it:

"Volunteering for Primary Ethics for 15 years is the longest job I've held, and probably the most important one, too. What's more meaningful than helping the next generation to work together on big, thorny issues affecting their future?"

We couldn't agree more.

Congratulations on 15 remarkable years, Rose-Anne! Thank you for your generosity, commitment and all the ways you continue to make a difference.

Tricia at Shellharbour Public School recently reached her seven years volunteering milestone. She was presented with her certificate and pin by fellow volunteer Christine King.
In Chris' words: "She was totally surprised and it brought tears to her eyes. I gave her a thank you from Primary Ethics and all the children she has taught over the years"

This just reiterates why these recognition awards are so important- we can't thank our volunteers enough for everything they do each week!

We acknowledge David Gonski's positive comments about ethics education in primary schools in NSW at the public hearing of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion on 18 August.

Primary Ethics has been delivering a world-class, expertly written ethics curriculum for over 15 years as a provider of Special Education in Ethics to NSW public schools. Our program helps students in Kindy to Year 8 develop the skills of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, respectful discussion and civil disagreement.

Our curriculum includes lessons on over 100 topics including on human rights, community, culture, identity, beliefs, tolerance and respect. We applaud the efforts of thousands of trained volunteers who deliver these ethics lessons with care and impartiality in classrooms across NSW throughout the school year.

Primary Ethics is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that does not receive government funding and is supported by donations from the community.

The author of the seminal Gonski review into education funding has told the royal commission that antisemitism education should begin in preschool.
