In the Gottmans’ long term research with couples, about 69% of the problems partners struggle with are perpetual issues. They rarely disappear. They usually come from differences in personality or lifestyle, not from anyone being “the problem.”
When couples only argue on the surface, those issues feel stuck and gridlocked. When they go deeper and explore the story underneath the conflict (background, values, and dreams), something shifts. The fight becomes a pathway to understanding instead of a wall between them.
