Our Tarneit children marked World Ocean Day with two hands-on setups. The first was a miniature ocean built from sand, water and blue colouring, filled with sea animals, where children explored habitats, played out their own stories and talked about how we protect our oceans and beaches.

The second was a numeracy activity dressed as a fishing expedition. Nets, scoops, water beads and numbered fish. Children searched, caught, identified the number and counted what they had.

This is what play-based learning looks like when it's done well. The learning is real and intentional. The children are having a wonderful time. Both things are true at once.

Across every Bright Beginnings centre, everything comes back to the same three rules: respect others, respect our environment, respect ourselves.

Three is a number a four-year-old can hold onto. Instead of a long list to remember, children have a way of working out what to do in a moment that nobody planned for. Is this safe? Am I looking after the people around me? Am I looking after this space, and myself?

In practice it looks like children making safe choices, putting their own belongings away, saying how they feel in a way that others can hear, and looking after their own needs as they grow more able to. Independence, in other words, and the confidence that comes with it.

Simple enough to remember. Big enough to cover almost everything.

It's National Science Week, and this year's theme is Seeds of Science, about how knowledge grows when it's nurtured.

Our Bexley BBLC Prep children have been deep in gardening for a while now, and the questions kept going in one direction, so they built a worm farm. They helped from start to finish, putting the worms' home together themselves, and they'll be the ones feeding it with food scraps from here on.

That's how it works at Bright Beginnings. Our educators follow what children are curious about right now, whether that's what lives under a rock, where the rain goes, or why the tall one is taller. Questions get taken seriously, and children get the time and the materials to work things out.

This week has a name. The curiosity doesn't stop when it ends.

Every morning at our Thurgoona centre, the Senior Preschool and Toddler children look for their own name and then work out who else is here today. It takes a few minutes and it's become part of the routine.

There's a lot going on in those few minutes. Recognising the shape of a word is one of the first steps toward reading. Noticing that a friend is away is social awareness. Deciding where your name goes and doing it yourself is independence. And seeing your name up there, every day, in the same place as everyone else's, is what belonging feels like when you're three.

The reading and writing comes later. This is where it starts.

Numbers and letters land better when children can pick them up.

At Bexley, our learning spaces are set up so numeracy and literacy happen through the children's hands. Sorting activities that get children grouping, counting and comparing. Tactile stations where letters have a texture. Corners built for storytelling, where a child can pick up a prop and take the story wherever they want it to go.

Our educators change the setups as the children's interests shift, so what's on the table this fortnight looks different to last. The thinking, the talking and the working alongside another child all come with it.

This is what early maths and reading look like at three and four.

This is what school readiness looks like at Glendenning. Children match numerals to quantities, build towers to test their answers, and talk it through with the child sitting next to them. The maths sticks because they've done it with their hands.

Our school readiness programme prepares children for primary school through their thinking, their confidence and the way they handle a room full of other children. Local teachers recommend it, and families tell us the difference shows up in that first week of Kindergarten.

2027 enrolments are now open across all Bright Beginnings centres.

Some of the best changes in our rooms start at a team meeting.

At Wangaratta, our educators come together regularly to talk through how things are actually going. What's working well for the children. What could be handled differently. Where a routine needs adjusting because the children have shown us something new.

Everyone at the table has a say, and the conversations are honest. Reflecting on our own practice is part of how we work, not something that happens once a year at review time.

Better practice starts with asking better questions.

It's National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. The 2026 theme, Living Our Truth, is about truth-telling as a foundation for identity and belonging, and the part Elders, families and communities play in passing stories and knowledge down to the children coming up behind them.

At Bright Beginnings, First Nations perspectives are part of how we learn, not something we bring out once a year. Every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the room, and to grow up knowing whose Country they're learning on.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children carry strong voices. Today, and every day, we listen.

Getting ready for big school doesn't mean sitting at a desk. It means learning by doing.

Across our centres, school readiness looks like children confidently identifying shapes, colours, and numbers through hands-on activities. It looks like alphabet exploration where letter recognition and early phonics happen through play, not worksheets. It looks like our Travelling Literacy and Numeracy Suitcase going home with families, so the learning continues after pick-up. And it looks like our library borrowing system teaching children the independence and organisational skills they'll use every day at school.

It's structured, it's intentional, and it's still fun.
