National Simultaneous Storytime 2026
Beneath our beautiful tree, surrounded by autumn’s golden colours and the gentle rustling of leaves above us, we gathered together as a Rainbow family to take part in National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is a special Australia wide event that celebrates the joy of reading, literacy and storytelling. Children in childcare centres, schools, libraries and homes all across Australia come together to read the same story at the same time, creating one shared moment of connection through books.
This year we joined thousands of other book lovers across the country to enjoy Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller. Little eyes looked on with wonder, imaginations came alive and our beautiful outdoor space became the perfect place to slow down, connect and simply enjoy the joy of stories together.
There is something so special about sitting beneath a tree, watching children listen closely and seeing their love of books grow with every page turned.
Alongside experiences like National Simultaneous Storytime, our children also enjoy our much loved Story Suitcase, a special suitcase that brings a new book adventure into our environment each month, creating excitement, curiosity and opportunities to fall in love with stories again and again
At Rainbow, we know stories are more than words on paper. They build language, spark imagination, nurture belonging and create memories that stay with children long after the final page is read.

There’s something truly magical about the place we get to call home!
Lately, our days have been sprinkled with the most beautiful reminders of just how special our natural surroundings are. Our much loved swamp wallaby Buru, has been visiting us again… gently hopping through as if he belongs here (and really, he does ). And today as if nature wanted to surprise us even more, a majestic deer quietly wandered by to say hello.
What a privilege. What a gift. To share our days with wildlife like this is something we never take for granted.
Our backyard… oh, our backyard. It’s more than just a space, it’s a feeling. A place where the world slows down. Where the view stretches wide and peaceful. Where you can breathe deeply and feel calm wash over you. It’s relaxing, grounding, and honestly… a little bit divine.
And in true Rainbow fashion, we don’t just look at nature we live it, we explore it, we become part of it.
Today in our Imagination Station area alone…
Autumn leaves became the perfect hiding place for insects playing hide and seek.
Clay from our dam was used to draw, etch, mould and create.
Charcoal from recent back burning turned into tools for artistic expression.
And under our teepee, we read a book written and illustrated by us, inspired by Buru and our breathtaking surroundings
This is what childhood should feel like.
Messy hands. Wonder filled eyes. Stories shaped by real experiences.
A home away from home, where nature is our teacher, our playground, and our inspiration.
What a world!

At Rainbow all of our educators hold current safety certifications and recently, our entire team refreshed their First Aid and CPR training. And it got us thinking…
If this knowledge is so important for us,
then our children deserve the opportunity to learn it too.
Because children are capable.
Because they rise to the occasion.
And because learning how to help others is one of the most important lessons of all.
So, of course it was time to organise a First Aid Workshop for our children, with the wonderful Mary from First Aid For You.
The children didn’t just learn… they became helpers. We saw little hands confidently applying pressure to a “cut,” choosing jumpers and socks when a bandage wasn’t there. We heard giggles as they practised nosebleeds heads down, talking like minions (which they loved l). And in a powerful moment, they stood completely still like statues, understanding how to stay safe if bitten by a snake or spider.
Then came CPR…
Tiny fingers placed carefully, soft voices singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat as they practised helping someone in need. It was calm, focused, and honestly… a little bit incredible to watch.
At Rainbow Family Centres, we believe in meaningful, real life learning, the kind that builds confidence, empathy, and capability.
Because even the smallest hands can make the biggest difference.

There are moments that ask us to slow right down… to listen, to feel, to remember that we are not separate from the land, but a part of it.
For some time now, a quiet little wallaby has been visiting us.
At first, just a glimpse in the distance… but day by day, they have been coming closer. Braver. More trusting.
And today… they came right up to our back fence.
The children felt it before anything was said, their bodies softened, their voices quietened, and together we stood still. Watching. Listening. Sharing space.
The wallaby moved gently just beyond our fence line, pausing as if noticing us too… and in that moment, it didn’t feel like we were watching wildlife.
It felt like we were being invited into something deeper.
A connection to the land.
A reminder that this place holds life and stories beyond our own. The children experienced what it means to be in relationship with nature, not just observers of it.
In that moment, the children were gently learning what it means to truly connect, to slow their bodies, to move with care, and to feel a deep sense of respect and belonging within the world around them.
At Rainbow, our home away from home, these are the moments that ground us. Where children don’t just learn about nature they feel their place within it.
And today, on this land, we shared a quiet moment of belonging.

Today, a quiet, beautiful moment unfolded, one that speaks to the very heart of who we are at Rainbow.
A child sat drawing, carefully creating a picture of himself. Surrounding him, he added love hearts… one by one. When we gently asked about them, he shared that each heart represented all the special people in his life, including each of his educators.
What a true blessing it is to be trusted, to be included, and to hold such a special place in a child’s heart.
This is connection.
This is trust.
This is a child showing us, in the most genuine way, “These are my people.”
What we witnessed was something you cannot program, cannot rush, and cannot replicate for display. It comes from time, from consistency, from relationships built with genuine care.
It comes from children feeling truly at home.
At Rainbow, our environment is more than beautiful spaces, it is built on connection. Every interaction, every conversation, every small moment is an opportunity to nurture a child’s sense of belonging, identity, and emotional security.
To be included in a child’s “special circle” is not something we take lightly, it is something we earn through trust, respect, and love.
And when children feel this safe… this connected… this loved…
you see it in the most beautiful ways.
In their confidence.
In their sense of belonging.
And sometimes… in the love hearts they draw.

Lately, we have been focusing on child safety, not just in how as adults we protect children, but in how children begin to understand safety for themselves
Today, that learning came to life through a simple, powerful moment of play.
The dinosaur was dangerous…
At least, that’s how one child saw it.
As the children moved through their play, exploring loose parts and creating their own stories, one child paused. He looked closely at the dinosaur, thinking, observing… deciding.
Then, quietly, he walked to the basket and chose a piece of wool.
He returned with purpose.
With careful, steady hands, he began wrapping the wool around the dinosaur intentionally, making sure it was secure. There was no hesitation, only focus. He had a plan.
When we asked about it, he stood tall and said,
“I did it because the dinosaur is dangerous… I was protecting everyone.”
And in that moment, his play told a deeper story.
He had noticed a risk.
He had thought about what to do.
And he had acted to keep everyone safe.
Not because he was told to…
But because he understood.
In his own way, through his imagination, he showed us what child safety can look like when it is truly embedded, when children begin to carry those ideas within them.
A protector.
A problem solver.
A child using his voice, his thinking, and his actions with purpose.
Because sometimes, the biggest learning moments don’t come from instruction…
They come from a child, a piece of wool, and a dinosaur that was bravely tied to kept everyone safe.

Welcoming Our New Rainbow Family Members!
At Rainbow, real life learning is at the heart of everything we do. Our curriculum comes to life through meaningful, hands on experiences and this recent project has been a beautiful example of that.
It all began with a shared idea… what if we welcomed some new members into our Rainbow family? After lots of discussions, curiosity, and research, the children decided we wanted some feathered friends
Together, we explored different types of birds, asking questions, sharing ideas, and thinking about what would be best for our environment. After much consideration, we chose Budgies, gentle, social, and perfect companions for children
The learning didn’t stop there! The children worked collaboratively to create a list of everything we would need to care for them showing responsibility, planning, and teamwork in action
A big thank you to our wonderful friends at Campbelltown Pet & Aquarium Centre for their incredible service, knowledge, and care. They helped us choose everything we needed, along with four of the most beautifully coloured budgies we’ve ever seen!
Back at Rainbow, we gave our new friends some time to settle in, while the children expressed their excitement through beautiful drawings and creative experiences. Then came the big moment… visiting them in their new home in our aviary
Now, the journey continues as we learn how to care for them, build connections, and of course… choose the perfect names!
If you see our birds, don’t forget to say hello, we’re hoping with lots of love and chatter, they might just learn to talk!

Safer Internet Day- Today and Every Day at Rainbow Family Centres
Today we recognise Safer Internet Day, a global initiative supported in Australia by the eSafety Commissioner, reminding us of the importance of safe, respectful, and responsible online behaviour.
At Rainbow Family Centres, digital safety isn’t just for today, it’s something we practice every day
What Safer Internet Day means to us:
This day is a chance to help children develop the foundations for being safe, confident, and respectful online, guided by eSafety principles:
Be kind – Show empathy, respect, and kindness in every online interaction.
Balance time online – Make space for offline connection, rest, and reflection.
Speak up – Report online abuse or harmful content to eSafety.
Protect your space – Use privacy settings, strong passwords, or parental controls to keep children safe online.
Start the conversation – Talk about online safety with family, friends, colleagues, and communities.
How we recognise digital safety every day:
-Encouraging safe choices, kindness, and respect
-Teaching early concepts of privacy, consent, and personal boundaries
-Modelling positive behaviour through play, discussion, and everyday interactions
-Supporting children to speak up and ask for help if something feels uncomfortable
-No photos. We do not take photos of children at all. Children are supported to understand that their image is private and deserves protection.
-Educators model and reinforce strong boundaries around privacy and consent.
This approach ensures children feel safe, secure, and respected at all times
Education through love and care
Digital safety is part of our everyday approach, grounded in relationships, trust, and emotional wellbeing. By embedding these practices early, we help children grow into confident, respectful, and safe digital citizens — online and offline.

🧧🐲 Chinese New Year-Learning Brought to Life
Today we came together as one big family to take part in a very special Chinese New Year lion dancing workshop, an experience that truly brought our learning to life.
The children listened with such care and attentiveness as we shared the story A Chinese New Year, building an understanding of why the lions visit once a year and the traditions of red objects, loud noises, fire, and light. Seeing their curiosity deepen as stories turned into real life experiences was incredibly special.
Through rhythm and movement, the children explored the drum, followed number patterns through clapping, and made music together using cymbals, strengthening listening skills, mathematical thinking, and a sense of belonging as they learned side by side.
One of the most powerful moments was seeing the lion up close. The presenters carefully showed the children how the lion works from the inside, explaining how the eyelids move and ears flap. For many children, having the courage to wear the lion head themselves was a moment of pride, confidence, and joy.
We love offering special workshops like this, as they extend upon our learning in meaningful ways, connecting stories, culture, movement, and real world experiences. These moments help children build understanding, respect, and a genuine connection to the world around them.
A heartfelt thank you to Lion Dance Kids 柔功門 for sharing your time, knowledge, and passion with our children
After the workshop, we continued the celebration by creating our February Story Suitcase, giving the children the opportunity to reflect, express, and carry their learning forward through storytelling and creativity.
Each month this magical suitcase becomes a shared learning space filled with books, props, symbols, and children’s ideas connected to our current learning. A little suitcase where big ideas grow and wonder lives!

Today, one of our clipboards stopped us in our tracks.
At our centre, we value children’s voices deeply. One of the ways we invite those voices is through blank paper on clipboards, simple, open spaces where children can tell us what they love and what we can do better. They’re usually filled with drawings, short notes, and honest thoughts from little hands.
But today, we found this message:
“I love that my sister E feels belonged here and loved. Thank you for taking care of my sister.”
What made this so incredibly special wasn’t just the words, it was who they came from.
For a sibling to notice that their sister feels safe, included, and loved… and then to take the time to write it down for us, well, that’s something truly meaningful.
It tells us that the sense of belonging we work so hard to create is felt not only by our children, but by their families too… even the smallest ones.
This is education through love and care.
This is what home away from home looks like.
This is what family looks like.
This is why we do what we do.
Thank you to this beautiful sibling for reminding us just how powerful children’s voices really are.
