We are back after a Looooooong break. Today we did a simple experiment.
We used a magnifying glass to burn a piece of paper.
Convex lens is focuses the light rays to a single point and hence called as converging lens.
Magnifying glass is made of convex lens. When it's placed above a sheet of paper , at the right distance ( focal length ), under the sun light, it focuses the sunlight on the sheet of paper.
Sunlight is made up of both heat and light. When the heat is focused at a point, it burns the paper.
Caution: please do it under an adult supervision
Tips:
1. Mark a cross on the paper before starting the experiment. It will help to focus the light at the same point.
2. Hold the magnifying glass such that the cross mark of the paper is at the focal point .
3. Process is quicker at noon than in the morning or evening
We repeated the same experiment with a face tissue paper and found that the tissue paper took slightly longer(3s) than a normal A4 sheet.
For the same duration of the fire, A4 sheet had greater damage than the tissue paper.
The experiment has to be repeated to confirm the observation and further investigation is to be done if the results are the same.
