James is from the Hunter region and is currently studying a Certificate III in Agriculture at Tocal College. Raised in the semi-rural town of Morisset, James was surrounded by hobby farms and a strong culture of animal care. This environment fostered his interest in agriculture and ignited a passion for working with plants and animals. James’ goal is to own his own farmland, where he can continue to develop and refine his agricultural skills.

For the first time in Australia, the dedication and service of NSW Police Force Troop Horses and Police Dogs have been formally recognised through the inaugural Commissioner’s Animal Commendations.

The service awards recognise the loyalty, courage and dedication of these incredible animals in serving the people of NSW, with Troop Horse RAS among those recognised for her service.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW has a special connection with the NSW Police Force and, in particular, the Mounted Police Unit, with a relationship that spans more than 130 years.

The NSW Police Force has been an important part of the Sydney Royal Easter Show for generations, helping to keep visitors safe, entertaining crowds and competing at the Show.

The NSW Mounted Police completed their first riding performance at the Sydney Show in 1895, followed by the first Musical Ride alongside the NSW Police Band in 1907.

Our connection has continued throughout the decades. In 1957, the first RAS police horse was presented to the NSW Police Department and made its first appearance at the Show in 1959. Since then, an RAS horse has continued to be part of the Mounted Police Unit.

We’re incredibly proud of our connection with the NSW Police Force and the Mounted Police Unit, and congratulate all of the Troop Horses and Police Dogs recognised for their service. NSW Police Force Mounted Unit - NSW Police Force

Emma was raised surrounded by vineyards on her grandfather's property in the Hunter Valley, NSW. After finishing school in Sydney, she realised that studying oenology perfectly combined her passions for chemistry, agriculture and w**e. After completing WSET Levels 2 and 3 in Sydney, she moved to Adelaide to study Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Adelaide. She is continuously pursuing w**emaking with purpose, getting involved in the industry wherever she can. In her final year, she looks forward to stewarding and judging opportunities, working with producers both large and small, and engaging in industry events.

Anita grew up on a farm in the small rural town of Coonamble and is currently studying a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) at the University of Canberra. Now in her third year, she has spent most of the academic year on placements within rural New South Wales, which she has thoroughly enjoyed.

A reminder that applications for the RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships will close on 5 October 2026.
