AI made publishing volume cheap.

More low-content books.
More AI fiction.
More Public Domain editions.
More competition.

Now KDP allows only 2 new titles per format each week.

If speed was your edge, that edge just got cut.

For publishers competing on quality and judgement?

This may play out very differently.

We're adapting the strategy inside Archived Academe now:

Amazon KDP now limits publishers to 2 new titles per format, per week.

For volume publishers, that sounds devastating.
But the same KDP title creation limit hitting YOU also hits thousands of competing publishers.

That changes the maths.
We've already shifted our strategy inside Archived Academe around what comes next.

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Full Review

One of the most famous books on Earth.

Over 33,000 Gootenberg downloads.
Around 1,000 competitors on some strong Amazon searches.
And multiple editions ranking as high as roughly #17,000 in Books.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz looked too obvious to be interesting.
The data says otherwise.

Overall Publishing Opportunity: ★★★★★ — 9.5/10
First-Book Suitability: ★★★★★ — 9.5/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 6 of 6

Would I publish The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as my first Public Domain book?

Yes…

33,000+ Gootenberg downloads.
Around 1,000 competitors on strong exact-title searches.
Multiple editions ranking between roughly and in Books.
And exceptionally clean rights.

The surprise isn’t that Oz still sells.
It’s that there still appears to be room.

First-Book Suitability: ★★★★★ — 9.5/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 5 of 6

And the rights are almost absurdly clean.

L. Frank Baum died in 1919.
Original illustrator W. W. Denslow died in 1915.
Original English.
No translator.

Even the original illustrations can become part of the product.
For a beginner, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz removes a lot of the complications we’ve found in previous tests.

Rights & Product Fit: ★★★★★ — 10/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 4 of 6

Then Publisher Rocket showed the sales.

Multiple editions of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sitting around:

in Books.

And one illustrated edition priced near $20 is still selling strongly.

That tells me something important:
buyers aren’t only shopping on price.

Paid Demand: ★★★★★ — 10/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 3 of 6

This is the number I wasn’t expecting.

Publisher Rocket shows roughly:
1,078 Amazon searches a month.
About 1,000 competitors.

For The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
One of the most famous books ever written.
That gap got my attention very quickly.

Demand & Competition: ★★★★★ — 9/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 2 of 6

Over 33,000 Gootenberg downloads in 30 days.

So The Wonderful Wizard of Oz clearly isn’t surviving on nostalgia alone.
People are still actively reading it.

The strange part?

A classic this famous should be buried under competition.
But the Amazon data starts telling a very different story.

Reader Demand: ★★★★★ — 9.5/10

The Public Domain Test #010 | THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ | Part 1 of 6

Surely The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is too competitive to touch.

That was my assumption too.
Everybody knows Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man and the Yellow Brick Road.

But when I looked at the actual publishing market...
the numbers were nothing like I expected.

Initial Opportunity: ★★★★★ — 9/10

The Public Domain Test #009 | THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK | Full Review

Everybody knows The Man in the Iron Mask.
Far fewer realise the story they know from Leonardo DiCaprio started as a novel by Alexandre Dumas.

And that gap gets interesting fast.
Around 27,000 Gutenberg downloads.
Only about 198 Amazon search results.
Yet an edition is sitting at #79,084 in Books.

So the original book may be relatively forgotten...
but people are still finding it and paying for it.

Then comes the twist.
It’s translated.

The old William Robson translation has an incredibly comfortable historical rights position — but translations can attract additional scrutiny on KDP.

So for the first time in The Public Domain Test, my verdict isn’t simply YES or NO.
It depends on the publisher standing behind the book.

Overall Publishing Opportunity: ★★★★★ — 9/10
Brand-New Account Suitability: ★★☆☆☆ — 3/10
Experienced/Warm Account Suitability: ★★★★★ — 9/10
