Irlen Syndrome can affect many aspects of people's lives.

My name is Victoria and I am 19 years old, I was diagnosed with Irlen syndrome when i was 10 years old after my mom jumped through hoops to find out why i was having such difficulty in school. Most doctors tried to tell her i had ADHD, another said I had a brain tumor, and she was not going to stand for answers that she knew were incorrect. Being diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome has changed my life, after being diagnosed i became a straight A student and received multiple scholarships to many different schools, and i am now currently on a road to becoming an Equine Veterinarian. Once I was diagnosed, I was also able to properly see a soccer ball coming at me, and this led to me getting a scholarship to play division 2 soccer in college as well! I am very passionate about children getting a proper education and I believe more people need to know about Irlen Syndrome and what it is, I have many people who are diagnosed with things like ADHD when I can tell by there symptoms that it is definitely Irlen. So, I have decided to make it my mission to travel to local schools in my state to advocate for Irlen Syndrome
and help to inform teachers so they can then go on and help their students.

Find reading challenging?

People who have trouble reading usually get told one of two things: 1️⃣ You have a vision problem and need glasses. 2️⃣ You’re simply having difficulty with basic reading skills and just need to practice more. But what about those with 20/20 vision and those for whom practice doesn’t help? Irlen Syndrome is not a vision problem; it is a perceptual dysfunction that occurs in the brain. The eyes take in all visual information, but the brain processes it. Sometimes the brain processes vision differently than reality. Some people with Irlen® Syndrome experience text similarly to the way you experience optical illusions like the one on the left. For those people, the text can be moving, blurry, distorted, etc., and some even see colors. Research shows that not everyone sees letters and words the same way, with the same spacing, or even recognizes them as letters. Irlen® Syndrome also can affect people in ways other than text distortions.
