And just like that, our Tax Forum season has concluded, with QLD Tax Forum wrapping up today!

Held on 28 and 29 May at the Westin, Brisbane, the Forum offered a full agenda of more than 20 topical sessions designed for practitioners working in private business and corporate tax, alongside a new Next Generation stream launched this year.

Newsworthy issues covered included a 2026 Budget analysis looking at what actually matters for advisers, what’s hot in property, updates across the energy and resources sector and a keynote address by David Montani focusing on tax reform – the bluster, bulldust and bedlam behind Australia’s reform gridlock.

Were you at the QLD Tax Forum? Check out the photos we captured during the event to see if you were snapped – and let us know what your favourite session was!

Missed your local forum this year? Our annual Tax Summit is on the way and will take place in Sydney from 2-4 September at the ICC. To register for this unmissable event, follow this link: https://www.taxinstitute.com.au/tax-summit

After completing high school, the big ‘where to next’ question comes up for many people, and Paul Iaconis – the dux of ATL002 CommLaw1 subject in Study Period 1 2025 - was no exception.

Initially unsure of which direction to take, a pep talk from his older brother inspired Paul to explore tax. He’s never looked back.

Paul’s career has taken him on an 18-year journey including nearly a decade with the Australian Taxation Office in increasingly senior roles, and now to Tax Compliance Manager at DPM Financial Services in Sydney.

So why, with so much real-world tax and leadership experience, did Paul decide to study CommLaw1? Paul realised that the most experienced professionals never stop learning, and that the best leaders lead by example.

“With the breadth, complexity and ever-changing landscape of tax and the profession, it's essential to keep pace, achieve success (however you choose to measure it) and ultimately provide the best advice and outcomes for your clients," says Paul.

Keen to follow in Paul’s footsteps? Read our full blog post about Paul here: https://www.taxinstitute.com.au/insights/articles/2026/how-commlaw-1-defines-modern-tax-practice

At The Tax Institute, we’re proud of and celebrate all our members – and from time to time, we love to put the spotlight on those who we feel will inspire others in our tax tribe.

Today, we’re spotlighting the amazing Anna Rizzo, who embarked on a career in tax 36 years ago and has been a member of The Tax Institute from her early professional days.

After the challenging period of the COVID pandemic – a time when Anna found the resources The Tax Institute offered its members invaluable – Anna received a call from one of the members of The Tax Institute, who reached out and asked if she wanted to be involved in any of the volunteer committees. Remembering how committed The Tax Institute was in getting her through the pandemic, she decided to give back and joined the Local Tax Club Planning Committee.

From there, she also joined the Sydney Tax Discussion Group and she has now been appointed to the Taxation of Individuals Technical Committee.

Anna says, “Getting involved in these committees has actually been a privilege,” and goes on to add that they are committed to performing the role and helping the members of the tax community.

Last Friday, we took nearly 40 tax students to six offices for the Hobart Office Crawl 2026!

This initiative provided a unique opportunity for University of Tasmania students to engage with tax and accounting firms in Hobart where they could meet practitioners working in the profession and discover where their tax career can take them.

A big thank you to the firms that participated, giving students a behind the scenes peek into their worlds. Friday wouldn’t have been successful without the help from KPMG, WLF Accounting & Advisory, Lorkin Delpero Harris, Deloitte, MJW Accountants and BDO. The crawl gave students an opportunity to catch a glimpse into who the firms were and what they do, learn about graduate and internship pathways, hear why each firm loves working in tax, and what a day in the life or their business looks like.

We came, we saw and we conquered – with three dedicated streams — SME, Corporate and Hot Topics (including Next Generation), more than 700 tax professionals in attendance and over 60 expert presenters, our NSW Tax Forum was a roaring success!

Held over 21 and 22 May at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney, the Forum brought together leading practitioners, industry experts and the ATO to explore the issues shaping day-to-day advisory work across the profession – with a number of sessions that were particularly relevant following last week’s Budget announcement.

Spanning everything from how the Federal Budget meets the government’s objectives to address the housing crisis and intergenerational equity, trusts, CGT, estate planning, succession issues, Payday Super, ATO audits, AI in practice, responsible AI governance and cryptocurrency and digital assets we found it hard to pick a favourite session – so we captured as many as we could on camera!

Did you make it to the Forum? We’d love to hear what you thought – and take a look through our photos to see if you were snapped!

Our latest episode of TaxVibe is now live! In their timely and insightful conversation, host John Storey, Tax Counsel at The Tax Institute and Jonathan Ortner, Tax Partner at Arnold Bloch Leibler, discuss trusts - specifically the Family Trust Distribution Tax in Australia, and its complexities.

John and Jonathan delve into the origins of FTDT and the traps that can arise from misunderstandings of the rules. Their conversation highlights the negative consequences of mistakes in trust distributions, including significant tax liabilities and the role of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in enforcing these rules.

Additionally, in this episode Jonathan emphasises the need for fairness and clarity in tax policy.
