This morning we had the pleasure of hearing from Tim Sandow, CTA, President of The Tax Institute, for the Official Welcome and Opening Address of .
Tim used an analogy about wolves and the ecosystem in Yellowstone National Park to demonstrate that, in a complex system, every element has its part to play. Holes in the system can have far-reaching effects, some easy to foresee, others that only show themselves much further down the line.
Sound familiar?
Tim said “Our tax system is large and complex, full of measures that all play different roles for different purposes but must interact with each other constantly. Where holes emerge in the system, it creates complexity, undesired outcomes and unforeseen consequences. It creates knock-on effects that no one saw coming – or sometimes, knock-on effects that some people did see coming.”
And we think Tim said it best when, in closing, his observation was that “if you want to make change, you need to bring people along the journey. People are perhaps the most important part of that system, with a vital role to play. And that includes everyone sitting here today...
“Tax is a people game – it is powered by people!”
We hope you all enjoy as we blend technical expertise, human connection and a community built on integrity in all we do into a celebration of what’s best about our tax system: the people who power it.
