This morning we had the pleasure of hearing from Tim Sandow, CTA, President of The Tax Institute, for the Official Welcome and Opening Address of .

Tim used an analogy about wolves and the ecosystem in Yellowstone National Park to demonstrate that, in a complex system, every element has its part to play. Holes in the system can have far-reaching effects, some easy to foresee, others that only show themselves much further down the line.

Sound familiar?

Tim said “Our tax system is large and complex, full of measures that all play different roles for different purposes but must interact with each other constantly. Where holes emerge in the system, it creates complexity, undesired outcomes and unforeseen consequences. It creates knock-on effects that no one saw coming – or sometimes, knock-on effects that some people did see coming.”

And we think Tim said it best when, in closing, his observation was that “if you want to make change, you need to bring people along the journey. People are perhaps the most important part of that system, with a vital role to play. And that includes everyone sitting here today...

“Tax is a people game – it is powered by people!”

We hope you all enjoy as we blend technical expertise, human connection and a community built on integrity in all we do into a celebration of what’s best about our tax system: the people who power it.

Today we celebrate two higher education candidates:
🥳 Adelaide-based solicitor Hanna Yelack, a two-time Dux award recipient for both CTA1 Foundations in Student Period 2 2025 and CTA2A Advanced in Student Period 3 2025
🥳 Darren Tappouras, Dux for CommLaw 1 in Study Period 3 2025 and a senior tax partner at Financial First Partners in Sydney

Congratulations Hanna and Darren on your achievements! 👏👏

Both studied these subjects as part of their Graduate Diploma of Australian Tax Law (GDATL), and admittedly, "fell" into a career in tax.

When asked her advice for those considering the GDATL program, Hanna said "Don't wait until you feel 'ready'. The courses actually equip you with the foundational knowledge that will make day-to-day tax work much easier and more logical."

In a chat with Darren, he commented about how much he enjoyed the content of the program, saying "I love the actual legal cases. This is high drama for nerds like me."

Over the past few weeks, we've been making our way to a handful of Australian universities – from QUT, Canberra and Sydney unis, all the way to Curtin University in Perth, WA.

Big thanks to Amanda Crowther, Alexandra Synac, Kirsty Ferguson and Merilyn Hughes-Narborough, who all chatted with students, at a variety of different events, including careers fairs, networking nights and pitch days to talk about careers in tax and student memberships.

We have loved meeting many students along the way, and look forward to catching up with more students soon at Macquarie Uni!

Hopefully see you all soon as student members! (You can learn more here if you're interested: https://www.taxinstitute.com.au/membership/student)
