Helping young IT Grads in Australia to kickstart their career from IT Helpdesk roles.

30/12/2024

10-12 Years ago as a fresh graduate stepping into the IT industry, I was often asked this question which industry I would like to work for.

Honestly, I didn’t have a clear answer at the time. Being new to the professional world, I felt overwhelmed by the vast array of options available.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized the importance of preparation before diving into the job market. Here are a few tips that I believe can help fellow graduates:

Research Different Industries: Take the time to explore various industries where IT skills are in demand. From finance and healthcare to entertainment and tech startups, each sector offers unique opportunities and challenges

Identify Your Interests and Strengths: Think about what excites you and where your strengths lie. Are you passionate about cybersecurity, software development, data analysis, or another area? Aligning your interests with your career path can lead to greater job satisfaction.

Network and Seek Mentorship: Connect with professionals on LinkedIn, attend industry events, and join relevant groups. Seeking advice from experienced mentors can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

Gain Practical Experience: Internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer work can give you a taste of different industries and help you build a diverse skill set. Practical experience is invaluable when it comes to understanding what you enjoy and where you excel.

Stay Updated with Industry Trends: The IT field is constantly evolving. Stay informed about the latest technologies, tools, and trends by reading industry blogs, attending webinars, and taking online courses.

Prepare for Interviews: Practice common interview questions and scenarios specific to the industries you’re interested in. Tailoring your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills and experiences can make a big difference.

Remember, it’s okay to not have all the answers right away. The journey of discovering your ideal career path is a process, and every step you take brings you closer to your goals.

All Thanks to GPT for putting organised words to my scattered thoughts.

As an IT mentor for fresh graduates, our mission is to guide them toward success. We focus on following.

Fresh graduates often possess valuable technical skills but lack direction. We work closely with them to upskill—whether it is mastering networks, ITIL, Networking, or honing soft skills.

Simultaneously, we fine-tune their resumes, highlighting strengths and aligning them with industry expectations.

The tech landscape evolves rapidly, and staying informed is crucial. I advise graduates to download 5-7 job descriptions for their desired roles. By examining these descriptions, they gain insights into current market trends, required skills, and responsibilities. This targeted approach ensures effective preparation and relevance.

Interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially for freshies. We provide feedback, and share strategies for handling common questions.

Graduates learn to articulate their skills confidently and showcase their potential.

Even if they face rejections initially, each interaction teaches them something valuable. With persistence, they secure roles, building on past experiences.

Remember, mentorship is more than advice—it’s a compass guiding graduates toward a successful career.

By connecting skills, market awareness, and practical experience, we empower them to thrive in the ever-evolving IT landscape.

Success Story Alert!

I'm thrilled to share that one of my recent trainees, after completing our IT training in April, has just secured a role in Sydney with a $75K+ super package!

After acing multiple interviews, including a second-round interview where he was asked key technical questions, he received offers from two companies: a Managed Service Provider (MSP) and a family business. With my guidance, he chose the MSP for better career growth opportunities.

Here’s a glimpse of the real-world questions he mastered:

1) How would you troubleshoot a network connectivity issue?
2) What’s the difference between on-prem AD and Azure AD?
3) How would you solve a corrupt user profile in Active Directory?
4) What happens when you remove a user from synced to non-synced in Azure AD?
5) What’s the difference between a user mailbox and a shared mailbox?
6) How would you solve a printer showing offline error?
7) How do you delegate access to a user’s mailbox in O365?
8.) What is a distribution list? Does it require a license?
9) Which ITSM tools have you used?
10) How many tickets did you resolve in a day?
11) How big was your service desk team?
12) How would you resolve a monitor with no display issue?
13) What is SLA, and why is it important?

These are just some of the skills and knowledge areas we focus on in our training. Ready to land your dream IT job? Let’s make it happen together at TechVortex!

3 points to consider for HR while going through hiring process.

1) HR do not like the self-introduction is same as your resume/CV.
Normally, HR invites interviews and already knows the basics about you, so they will be more interested in hearing new information when introducing yourself.

Formula of self-introduction
1. Name + Education + Major (If your major is not matching with the job applied, you may skip it.)
2. Working experience: Simply mention about your previous job scope from recent to previous.
3. Perception of the business/product of the company being interviewed. (Do some research & effort before interview)
4. Highlight your strengths (Relate to the requirements of the jobs) , talk about what are the value/assistance you can bring to the company.

2) HR is very keen to get you on board.
Most HR is actually interested in recruiting the right people to the job, especially when the position is in urgent need. Therefore, jobseekers do not have to be overly humble during the interview.

When you're dropping resume or communicating with HR, you may stand up and fight for higher salary. (Of course, the expected salary is reasonable)

3) HR generally only pays lower salaries
Most of the time, when HR posting job ads and offering higher salary in order to attract high qualified talents. For example, $3,500 - 5,000 in job ads, actually it's only $ 3,500.

You must clear enough about the salary structure.
- Salary offer is before tax/ after tax?
- It's only basic or include year-end bonus/ benefits/ allowance
