THERE ARE NO CORRECT CHARACTERS IN AUDITIONS

Most actors walk into an acting audition trying to discover the right way to play the character. But casting directors aren’t looking for 40 actors giving them the same performance. They’re looking for range, ideas, and possibilities. They want to see what different actors can bring to the role.

Your job in a self tape isn’t to read the casting director’s mind. It’s to make a choice and commit to it. Bring your instincts, your perspective, and your interpretation of the character. The version you create doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

The strongest screen acting performances don’t make casting think, That’s exactly what I expected. They make them think, I want to see more. Stop trying to find the perfect character. Create one that only you could play.

WHY RACHEL MCADAMS STOOD OUT IN THE NOTEBOOK CHEMISTRY TEST

Most actors prepare for a chemistry test the same way they prepare for acting auditions and self tapes. They plan the beats, stay on the mark, and try to control the performance. But chemistry reads are designed to disrupt that control.

In the The Notebook chemistry test, Rachel McAdams was clearly prepared. But when Ryan Gosling pushed her and removed any breathing room, she did not try to hold the plan together. She turned away and trusted her instincts. This is common in chemistry tests where directors or casting directors deliberately push actors to see how they respond under pressure.

Trust that what you do and where you go will be true to your version of the character. That is what casting directors are watching for. Not just preparation, but awareness and adaptability. The strongest acting auditions are not rigid. They are alive. When you trust your instincts, your performance becomes responsive, specific, and real.
