In this hadith, Ali, peace be upon him, appears as a father counselling his son with something weightier than any material inheritance: a complete way of life uniting one's duty to Allah with one's duty to others. He begins with fearing Allah, prayer, and charity, placing the son's relationship with his Lord at the very foundation, then moves to forgiving wrongdoing, restraining anger, and maintaining family ties, showing that a father's counsel here is concerned with refining the heart of malice and estrangement, not merely observing outward rituals.
He continues with forbearance towards the ignorant, seeking understanding in religion, and acting with deliberation, instilling in his son wisdom in dealing with people and in making decisions, and closes with devotion to the Qur'an, good neighbourliness, enjoining right, forbidding wrong, and avoiding every indecency — completing a counsel that leaves no aspect of his son's life without guidance. This stands as a noble model of what a father's counsel to his son should be: passing on piety of heart, excellence of character, and soundness in one's relationship with Allah and with others, rather than mere passing advice.
