👨‍👩‍👦👨‍👩‍👧👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 NATIONAL FAMILIES WEEK 👩‍👩‍👦👨‍👨‍👦👩‍👧👨‍👦

This week the Kangaroos class is participating in National Families Week, the children will be discussing the diversity of each family and how they can differ from household to household, we are revisiting the family photos that we drew and discussing them as a class and explaining who is in our households. We will also be looking at what each family enjoys doing together.

This is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life.

Let’s take the time to reflect on the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting, and nurturing children especially as they grow.

Last week our Preschool Class (4-5year olds) ventured off on an excursion to visit Brookvale Public School, we are lucky enough to be located in the grounds of the public school.

The Kangaroos class went to visit the different play areas within the school grounds. We continued to develop different gross motor skills as we took part in some risky play.

⚽️Gross motor skills are the abilities required to control the large muscles of the body for walking, jumping, skipping, and more.

We also did a walk around the school and looked at the classrooms, play areas and then discussed how big school will be a little different. This was a great learning opportunity to familiarise the children with the school as most of our Kangaroo Class will be attending Brookvale Public School next year.

🐛The Very Hungry Caterpillar🐛

Our Bilbies Class have been exploring the story 'The Vey Hungry Caterpillar'. This is a current interest for the children and they have been enjoying the story very much!

The Bilbies created a game called to feed the hungry caterpillar and the children fed the caterpillar with the “food”. They painted paper plates and made a giant caterpillar and also a butterfly.

The children went on a caterpillar hunt outdoors to find some real caterpillars and discussed where they might be hiding, they also watched a short children’s documentary on the life cycle of the caterpillar.

This group activity incorporates many learning benefits:
🐛Extending children’s interests
🦋Teamwork and Turn Taking
🐛Learning about Nature
🦋Hand Eye Coordination Skills
🐛Sense of Achievement

🐷🐮Small World Animal Play🐷🐮

Our 0-2 Sugargliders Class has been engaging in small world play this week. The children have been loving exploring different farm and jungle animals. We have set up puzzles and small sensory activities for utilising natural materials from the outside environment to provide different textures.

🐯Small world play encourages children to be creative and uses their imagination like no other play. It boosts their confidence and pride when they show off their creations for the first time.

🦁Emotional Development
While engaged in small world play, children can explore and experiment with different emotions and act out these scenes in their play.

🐵Cognitive Development
Small worlds as well as being fun, are the ideal platform for nurturing children's imagination from a young age. This play provides them with an opportunity to explore new materials, act out scenarios from real life, build language, practice social skills and gain an understanding of the world.

The Sugargliders Class has been busy this past month engaging in a variety of different sensory craft experiences.

With sensory play, there’s always much more going on than meets the eye.

🧚🏻 Sensory activities, in addition to being fun and interesting for babies and young children, encourage children to explore and investigate. Furthermore, these activities support children to use the ‘scientific method’ of observing, forming a hypothesis, experimenting, and making conclusions.
🧚🏻 Sensory activities also allow children to refine their thresholds for different sensory information, helping their brain to create stronger connections to sensory information and learn which are useful and which can be filtered out.
🧚🏻 Through sensory play, the child can learn to block out the noise which is not important and focus on the play which is occurring with their peer.
🧚🏻 The use of sensory play can assist the child with touching, smelling, and playing with the texture in an environment with little expectation. As the child develops trust and understanding of this texture it helps build positive pathways in the brain to say it is safe to engage with this food.

Other reasons sensory play is beneficial for children include:

👐🏼 It helps to build nerve connections in the brain
👐🏼 It encourages the development of motor skills
👐🏼 It supports language development
👐🏼 It encourages ‘scientific thinking and problem solving
👐🏼 It can involve mindful activities which are beneficial for all children
👐🏼 The desire to engage with sensory play comes naturally for children and should be encouraged and supported both at home and in early learning environments.
