Important tip for Listening,

At the beginning of each section read the questions carefully before the recording starts. This will help you to follow the recording and identify the answers.

An important tip for Listening,

Practice your shorthand

You do not have to write everything that you down: you have 10 minutes at the end to copy your answers onto the answer sheet. So what you need to do is to learn how to write down enough for you to recognise as you are listening so that you can write it out in full later. The one exception to this is in part 1 with numbers and names where you have to write everything out in full as you are listening – that is the challenge.

Here are some Speaking Tips for you guys!

Before going into the room, take three DEEP breaths!

Do not worry about mistakes - everybody makes them! Instead, think about communicating well.

Do not worry about your accent. Just speak clearly.

Avoid slang or very informal language. We only use such language with our close friends.

Say NAMES slowly. If you say a name in your own language, you MUST explain it!

Do NOT use difficult words or expressions unless you are 100% sure you know how to use them right. If you use words at the wrong time, your score will be lower!

Make good, clear sentences to express your meaning.

Do not speak either too fast nor too slow.

You cannot ask questions on Part 1 or Part 2, but you SHOULD ask questions on Part 3 if you do not understand.

Do not change the topic. The examiner will think you cannot speak enough on that topic and will give you a lower score.

If you don't know much about a topic, talk about something related to that topic, then explain the connection.

Do not memorize answers to prepare for the test. The examiner will hear that you are not speaking naturally and will change the topic.

Practice speaking with a watch. You should use about 4 minutes for each part of the Speaking Test.

Practice speaking with a friend. Your friend can surprise you with all kinds of questions.

IELTS Writing Task 1: PIE CHARTS

Aim: This section answers commonly asked questions about giving a good answer to a pie chart
question in Task 1.

Problems: Many candidates write about every detail in a pie chart in a list format. This means that
their sentence structure is very limited and they can't get more than a Band 5.

Are pie chart questions more difficult than other Task 1 questions?
No, not really - they might appear more complicated visually because of the way they represent
information and also because pie charts are normally in questions with more than 1 set of data, but
they are no more difficult (or easy!) than other Task 1 questions.

Do I have to include all of the information in a pie chart?
No, you don't. Pie charts often have categories such as 'miscellaneous' and 'others'; you don't have
to include these areas in your answers because it's not really clear what they refer to and they are
normally included just to make up 100%. Also, writing "…in addition miscellaneous accounted for 7%
of all car sales…" doesn't really make any sense

If you are going for your speaking exam - please make sure you are at least half presentable!

In other words, wear some neat clothing (not necessarily business attire), shave yourself, and make sure you wear some deodorant if you just had a marathon!

Even though you are not trying to find a lover but at least have the courtesy to make the process enjoyable for the examiners! Maybe they will leave you with a good impression! :)

Do you know what the difference is between "Yours Sincerely" and "Yours Faithfully"?

"Yours Sincerely" is used when the recipient is addressed by name and is known to you to some degree, and "Yours Faithfully" is used when the recipient is not known by name.

For example,

Dear Bob, Yours sincerely.
Dear Sir, Yours faithfully.

IELTS Writing Task 1
In the first part, you are given a task based on some graphic or pictorial information. You are expected to write a descriptive report of at least 150 words on the information provided.

IELTS Writing Task 2
The second task is more demanding. You are expected to produce a written argument on a given topic and to organise your answer clearly, given some examples to support your points. You will have to write at least 250 words and, as Task 2 is longer than Task 1, you are advised to spend approximately 40 minutes on this task and 20 minutes on the first task.

IELTS General Writing
If you are planning to take the GT module, the Writing test is different. You are allowed one hour to complete two tasks, of 150 and 250 words, as in the Academic module. However, Task 1 is always a letter, while Task 2 is an essay based on a given topic.
