Why bother gathering at all? Not because solitary work is deficient. Not because covens are wiser than individuals — over fifty years says otherwise often enough. We gather because certain things only happen between people. Another person sees what I can't see in myself. Their experience disturbs the interpretation I'd grown comfortable with. Several voices make a chant no single voice can produce.

And this, mainly: another person gives me someone towards whom my Craft must become ethical. Alone, I can imagine myself endlessly patient, wise and trustworthy. Put me in relationship and we'll find out.

In this episode Frances Billinghurst sits down with Tim Ozpagan Hartridge, a modern witch, ritualist, and writer based in Sydney, Australia, who has been immense in coven-based witchcraft and Western esoteric practice for some five decades.

Tim founded WitchesWorkshop in 1999, created Nuit’s Veil Coven and the NOX: Night Soul Journey tradition, and hosts the Other Conversations podcast. He has recently published "Anatomy of a Witches Coven: Coven Work as an Alchemical Vessel — Power, Structure, & Transformation in Witchcraft".

What remains when the Circle opens?
The ritual ends. The candles are extinguished. The room returns to being a room, and the people who gathered begin turning towards ordinary life again.

Yet something of the Work travels with us.

We carry what we have learned through practice, the trust that has grown between us, and the responsibilities we have become capable of holding. We also carry questions, unfinished conversations, and experiences whose meaning may take longer to understand.

Three words from the simplest exercise I teach. Hands joined, breath steadied, a current imagined moving from one companion into the next, round and round.

Receive. Carry. Give.

Receive: hospitality, teaching, correction, trust, experiences you have no language for yet. Carry: turn up again, repeat the rite, discover what's harder than the book suggested, make mistakes, become responsible for something that first belonged to somebody else. Give: lead a section, help someone newer, write down what experience taught you, hand the Cup onward.

Nothing passes through you unchanged. That's the small mystery in it.

Fidelitas is one of the old words worth rescuing. It means faithfulness — to ring true, to your word, to the Work, to the agreements you made with the people beside you. It does not mean obedience to a leader, and it does not mean loyalty to a group regardless of what that group does. Those get conflated constantly, usually by whoever benefits.
Apply the same test to authority. The measure isn't who knows everything, approves everything and remains indispensable. It's whether responsibility circulates — whether the Circle can now carry together what once rested in one pair of hands.

A manipulative question distorts the magical field.
Most people know when they're doing this — asking the cards to confirm what they've already decided, dressing up a preference as an inquiry.
The cards may answer. But they're answering the real question underneath, not the one you performed.
