🟢 STAGE 1 — BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
Vehicle Control & Basic Driving Skills
1. Preparing to Drive & Vehicle Control
* Door: Unlock → enter → lock → check door is secure
* Seat: Adjust distance and height; correct elbow and hand position
* Mirrors: Correctly adjust side and rear-view mirrors
* Starting the vehicle: Ignition, warning lights, fuel, instruments and controls
* Controls: Brake, accelerator, steering, gears, indicators, lights, horn, wipers, windows and temperature
2. Moving Off & Stopping
* Seat belt
* Starting and shutting down
* Selecting gear
* Mirrors → signal → blind-spot check
* Safe and smooth moving off and stopping
3. Steering
* Pull-push steering
* Hand-over-hand steering where appropriate
* Maintaining smooth and accurate control
4. Gear Changing
* Manual and automatic transmission
* Correct gear selection
* Smooth acceleration and deceleration
5. Scanning & Observation
* Distance
* Surface
* Sides
* Mirrors
* Instruments
6. Reversing
* Blind-spot and mirror checks
* Speed and steering control
* Selecting reverse gear
* Three-point turns
* Using reversing aids such as cameras and sensors
🔵 STAGE 2 — TRAFFIC SKILLS
Building Confidence in Real Traffic
7. Simple Traffic
* Drive safely and legally in low-density traffic
* Apply signs, signals and road rules
8. Parking
* Kerb-side parking
* Angle parking
* Parallel parking
* Other appropriate parking situations
9. Complex Traffic
* Medium- to high-density traffic
* Intersections
* Traffic lights
* Pedestrians and cyclists
* Multiple hazards
10. Changing Lanes
* Observation
* Mirrors and blind spots
* Signalling
* Safe lane changes
* Merging and diverging
* Overtaking safely and legally
🟠 STAGE 3 — LOW-RISK DRIVING
Developing Safe Decision-Making
11. Speed Management
* Maintain a 3-second following gap
* Increase the gap in poor conditions
* Leave approximately 1–2 car lengths when stopped, where appropriate
* Reduce speed for curves, crests and limited vision
* Create a safety buffer
* Maintain a safe traffic flow
12. Road Positioning
* Maintain crash-avoidance space
* Keep a safe buffer from oncoming and parked vehicles
* Move appropriately to the left around crests and curves
* Avoid other drivers’ blind spots
* Left turn → left position
* Right turn → centre position on a two-way road
* Right turn from the appropriate position on a one-way road
* Finish turns in the correct lane
13. Decision Making
Make safe decisions when:
* Left turning
* Right turning
* Turning across another vehicle’s path
* Changing lanes
* Moving off from traffic lights
* Entering or crossing traffic
14. Responding to Hazards
* Protect crash-avoidance space
* Identify hazards early
* Ease off the accelerator
* Cover the brake when appropriate
* Brake when necessary
* Pause acceleration
* Buffer or change lanes when appropriate
* Re-check mirrors when changing speed or position
✅ Foundation achieved
The learner now has developing vehicle control, traffic skills and low-risk driving habits. What comes next is experience.
🟣 STAGE 4 — GAINING EXPERIENCE
Preparing for Different Driving Environments
15. Driving at Night
* Correct use of headlights and high beam
* Fog lights when appropriate
* Manage reduced visibility
* Deal with glare from other vehicles
* Reduce speed when vision is restricted
16. Driving in Adverse Conditions
* Correct use of wipers and demisters
* Extra attention to road surface
* Increase following distance to 4 seconds or more
* Understand reduced visibility
* Manage reduced tyre grip
* Smooth braking, acceleration and cornering
17. Country Driving
* Sealed highways and country roads
* Railway and stock crossings
* Narrow bridges
* Overtaking lanes
* Fatigue management
* Wildlife hazards
* Sharing roads with heavy vehicles
* Applying low-risk driving principles
18. City & Motorway Driving
* City traffic
* Toll roads and e-tags
* On-ramps and off-ramps
* Tunnels
* Variable speed limits
* Direction signs
* Motorway safety
* Keep left unless overtaking where required
19. Preparing for the Driving Test
* Review all required skills
* Identify and improve weaknesses
* Understand test requirements
* Book the test
* Prepare required paperwork
* Ensure logbook requirements are met, where applicable
* Practise test-style driving
* Stay calm, observe carefully and drive
