OLD SCHOOL: Inspector Ron went a bit retro this morning when he was called to Wollemi National Park after an emergency beacon (EPIRB) was activated by three canyoners.
One had an injured ankle and a helicopter was needed to winch them out of their remote location.
But approval to winch needs to come from the Duty Superintendent after those on scene provide a full situation report, including weather conditions.
And that’s usually done by phone.
With no phone reception in the area, quick thinking Ron hot-footed it to a phone box, and organised for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to winch a paramedic in to assess the patient and then winch both back out.
The patient was then taken to a staging area for further treatment.
Don’t worry though - if there’s no phone reception and no phone box, our crews can radio the Aeromedical Control Centre and have someone relay their report.
